Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Harbor

Six months after the grand gala, the city was wrapped in the warm, golden light of late autumn. The dark, frozen night where Emma had driven the heavy truck through the blizzard felt like a lifetime ago.

Yet, in the quietest corners of the city, old ghosts occasionally rattled their chains.

Gabriel sat in the sunlit garden of the Valenti estate, watching Emma practice her archery with Marco. The young girl had developed an incredible focus, her small hands holding the kid-sized compound bow steady as she let an arrow fly, striking the center of the straw target forty feet away.

"Bullseye!" Marco cheered, clapping his massive hands. "You're better than half my former guards, kid!"

Emma grinned proudly, looking back at Gabriel, who gave her a approving nod.

Mara walked out onto the stone patio carrying a tray of fresh lemonade. She wore a simple white linen dress, her hair tumbling softly over her shoulders. She looked peaceful, her skin glowing with health, her eyes completely clear of the exhaustion that had once defined her life.

"You're spoiling her, Marco," Mara said with a smile, setting the tray down on the iron table.

"A girl needs to know how to defend herself, Mrs. Valenti," Marco replied with a respectful bow. "Though with Don Gabriel and me around, I doubt anyone will ever get within ten miles of her."

A quiet chirp sounded from Gabriel’s secure phone on the table. He picked it up, his dark eyes scanning the encrypted message.

Mara noticed the subtle shift in his posture—the tightening of his jaw that belonged to the man he used to be.

"Gabriel?" Mara asked softly, walking over to stand behind his chair, resting her hands on his broad shoulders. "What is it?"

Gabriel deleted the message and placed the phone back on the table. He turned, reaching up to cover her hand with his own.

"Carmine’s former lieutenant, Vance, tried to organize a small faction at the harbor docks this morning," Gabriel said calmly. "He thought he could seize one of our old shipping warehouses while we were focused on the hospital opening."

Mara’s heart gave a brief, familiar flutter of anxiety, but she forced herself to breathe through it. "What happened?"

Gabriel looked up at her, his eyes warm and completely untroubled. "Nothing. My security team handed him over to the federal authorities before he even unlocked the warehouse gate. No gunfire. No violence. Just a very quiet arrest."

He pulled Mara around to the side of his chair, pulling her down onto his lap.

"I told you, Mara," Gabriel whispered, brushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear. "The old ways are dead. I don't rule with blood anymore. I rule with the law, and I protect this family with absolute precision."

May you like

Mara rested her cheek against his shoulder, listening to the steady, strong beat of his heart. "I know. I just... I still fear the darkness coming back."

"Then let me be your light," Gabriel said softly, kissing her forehead. "Always."
