Chapter 10 - The Horizon of Vale Meridian

One year later.

The summer sun shone bright over the private estate of the Vale family in Lake Forest, an hour north of Chicago.

The fifty-acre property was a masterpiece of green rolling lawns, private rose gardens, and a grand stone mansion overlooking the blue expanse of Lake Michigan.

On the wide back terrace, a long wooden table was set for a summer afternoon lunch.

Mara sat in a comfortable wicker lounge chair under a large white umbrella. She wore a simple, elegant yellow sundress, her dark hair tied back in a loose braid. Resting in her arms was a three-month-old baby boy with dark hair and bright, curious brown eyes—Leo Luca Vale.

Sitting beside her on the grass, playing with a golden retriever puppy, was Julian—her brother.

After eighteen months in Canada under quiet supervision, Julian had proven his genuine reform. He had earned his managerial credentials, stayed entirely clean, and was now working as a junior logistics auditor for Vale Meridian’s regional office in Wisconsin, living an honest, quiet life.

"He looks just like Luca when he’s sleeping," Julian remarked, looking over at his small nephew with a warm, gentle smile. "He’s got that stern eyebrow."

Mara laughed softly, kissing the baby's soft cheek. "Let's hope he inherits his father's brain and not his temper."

The terrace doors opened, and Luca stepped outside.

He wore dark trousers and a simple blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He carried a tray of fresh iced tea and sliced fruit.

He walked over to Mara, setting the tray down before kneeling beside her chair. He looked down at his sleeping son, his hard face softening into an expression of pure, holy devotion.

"Is he asleep?" Luca whispered gently.

"Just went down," Mara smiled, resting her hand in his hair. "How was the call with Tokyo?"

"Grant handled it," Luca said smoothly, taking her hand and pressing a kiss to her palm. "I told him I was busy with higher-priority executive business."

Julian smiled, standing up from the grass. "I'll take the puppy for a walk down by the lake, give you guys some quiet time."

"Thank you, Julian," Mara said warmly.

As her brother walked down the green lawn toward the water, Luca moved into the lounge chair beside Mara, pulling her and their baby gently into his lap, wrapping his massive arms around both of them.

They sat together in the warm afternoon sun, listening to the gentle rustle of the oak trees and the soft sound of the lake waves lapping against the shore below.

Luca looked down at his wife—the plus-size secretary who had walked into his boardroom three years ago with a folder full of numbers, and who had ended up giving him an entire world of love, peace, and grace.

"What are you thinking about?" Mara murmured softly, resting her chin against his shoulder.

"I was thinking about the day you walked into that meeting seven minutes late," Luca confessed softly, his eyes filled with endless warmth as he looked at her.

"I was so terrified that morning," she remembered with a quiet smile.

"And I was terrified too," Luca admitted, kissing her cheek. "Because that was the morning I realized I couldn't live another day without protecting you."

Mara smiled, leaning into his chest, feeling the deep, steady beat of his heart against her cheek—a heart that belonged entirely, permanently to her.

"We built something good, Luca," she whispered as the sun cast golden light across their private paradise.

"We built a home, my queen," Luca Vale vowed softly, holding his family tight as the future unfolded before them, bright, secure, and forever free of shadows.
