Chapter 7 - The Fury of the King

The storm raging over Chicago seemed to mirror the absolute carnage unfolding across the city’s underworld.
Within forty-five minutes of Mara’s abduction, Luca Vale’s men had launched a simultaneous, ruthless assault on every property owned or operated by Salvatore Rizzoli’s syndicate.
The Red Velvet speakeasy in the South Loop was raided by three armored trucks; its illegal gambling dens were smashed, and Rizzoli’s top two lieutenants were dragged out into the rain, bound and shivering, forced to give up every safehouse address in the district.
At 10:15 PM, a convoy of four black SUVs slammed through the chain-link gates of an old, abandoned cold-storage warehouse near the Calumet River.
The heavy steel doors of the warehouse were blown off their hinges by explosive charges, filling the dark, freezing air with smoke, sparks, and deafening thunder.
Tactical shooters in dark gear swarmed the building, systematically eliminating Rizzoli’s mercenary guards with brutal, terrifying precision.
Inside the central refrigeration room, Salvatore Rizzoli sat behind a wooden desk, his hand shaking as he clutched a shotgun, surrounded by his remaining four gunmen.
Tied to an iron pillar in the center of the room was Mara. The chloroform had worn off, leaving her with a roaring headache, but her eyes were clear, fierce, and defiant as she glared at her captors.
The double doors of the refrigeration room exploded inward.
Luca Vale stepped through the smoke.
He wore no body armor, no helmet—just his wet charcoal suit, his white shirt stained with rain and gunsmoke, holding a heavy pistol in his right hand. His face was a terrifying mask of raw, unadulterated slaughter.
"Luca!" Mara cried out, her heart soaring with incredible relief.
"Drop your weapons!" Rizzoli screamed, grabbing Mara by her hair and pulling her back against his chest, pressing his shotgun against her side. "One step closer, Vale, and I paint this floor with her!"
Luca didn't stop walking. He moved forward with slow, mechanical rhythm, ignoring the three gunmen pointing rifles at his chest.
"Salvatore," Luca said, his voice dropping into a register so low and terrifying it felt like the floorboards were vibrating beneath their feet. "You have thirty seconds to release my wife."
Rizzoli blinked, momentarily caught off guard. "Wife? She’s your secretary!"
"She is my life," Luca growled.
In a split-second flash of absolute tactical mastery, Luca fired three rapid shots.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The three gunmen standing beside Rizzoli dropped instantly, struck with headshots before they could even pull their triggers.
Rizzoli gasped in sheer terror, his hands shaking as he tried to adjust the heavy shotgun toward Luca’s chest.
Mara didn't hesitate. Gathering every ounce of her strength, she drove her heavy elbow backward directly into Rizzoli’s broken ribs.
Rizzoli wheezed in pain, dropping his grip on her.
Luca lunged forward like a striking panther. He grabbed the barrel of the shotgun, yanked it out of Rizzoli’s hands, and drove a crushing left hook directly into the mob captain’s jaw.
Rizzoli collapsed onto the concrete floor with a sickening crunch, his cane clattering away into the darkness.
Luca stood over him, his heavy boot pressing firmly onto Rizzoli’s chest, his gun pointed directly between the older man’s eyes.
"Please... Luca... please!" Rizzoli begged, blood pouring from his mouth, tears mixing with the cold sweat on his face. "It was business! Just business!"
"Business ended the moment you laid a hand on her," Luca hissed low, his finger tightening on the trigger.
"Luca! No!"
Mara’s voice rang out through the cold room.
Luca froze. He looked over his shoulder.
Mara was standing beside the iron pillar, her ropes untied by Daniel who had rushed in behind Luca. She took two unsteadily steps toward him, her face filled with intense love and gentle pleading.
"Don't do it, Luca," she whispered, stepping closer until she was touching his arm. "Don't ruin your life for this insect. He’s defeated. His empire is gone. Let the federal authorities take what’s left of him."
Luca looked down at Rizzoli, then back at Mara’s beautiful, bruised face.
"He tried to take you from me," Luca rasped, his chest heaving with lingering rage.
"And he failed," Mara said gently, reaching up to gently cup his rough jaw with her hand. "Because you came for me. You saved me. Now... bring me home."
The terrifying fire deep within Luca’s dark eyes slowly began to soften. He looked at her gentle hand on his face, feeling the warmth of her touch calling him back from the edge of absolute darkness.
Luca lowered his gun.
He turned to Daniel. "Call the Federal Prosecutor. Tell him Salvatore Rizzoli is waiting in cold storage with thirty years of unsealed extortion records."
"Understood, Boss," Daniel said, stepping forward with zip-ties.
Luca turned completely away from Rizzoli. He wrapped his broad arms around Mara, pulling her fiercely against his chest, burying his face in her hair as he lifted her slightly off her feet.

Mara wrapped her arms around his neck, holding him with equal fierce devotion, letting her tears fall freely against his wet suit jacket.
"I've got you," Luca whispered into her skin, his voice trembling with emotion. "I've got you, my heart."
