Chapter 3 - The Mask Crumbles

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Arthur Hale’s face turned the color of ash. His hand hovered over his cognac glass, shaking visibly. "That's... that's ridiculous. A maid? A fat, useless servant reconstructed my corporate holdings?"
"Careful, Arthur," Ronan whispered, the room temperature seeming to drop ten degrees in an instant. "You are speaking about the Chief Financial Architect of the Blackwood Estate. The woman who holds the master encryption keys to every asset my family owns."
Vivien stared at Ivy, her mouth slightly open, her eyes wide with a horrific mix of disbelief and panic. "No... no, she’s just a housemaid! She cleans the toilets! She scrubs the floors!"
"She works in this house because it is the safest place in North America," Ronan revealed, looking at Ivy. "Three years ago, when your father’s hitmen tried to find the whistleblower who uncovered his offshore tax fraud, I offered Miss Lancaster absolute protection under my roof. She chose to wear the apron so that your father's spies would never suspect that the mind destroying his empire was sitting fifty feet away from him."
Ivy stepped forward, her voice calm, level, and entirely devoid of fear.
"Your father's firm has been operating on a Ponzi scheme since 2021, Miss Hale," Ivy said, pulling a thin tablet from her apron pocket and tapping the screen. "He used the Blackwood Consortium’s name on forged guarantee bonds to secure two billion dollars in loans from European banks. Tonight's charity gala wasn't a party—it was your father's attempt to secure a public endorsement from Ronan to keep his creditors from seizing his properties tomorrow morning."
Vivien gasped, turning to her father. "Father... is this true?"
Arthur didn't answer her. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small silver recording device, his face twisted into a mask of pure desperation.
"It doesn't matter what you know, girl!" Arthur snarled, glaring at Ivy. "I have two city councilmen and the police chief in the ballroom right now! If Ronan breaks our marriage contract, I will leak the old Blackwood syndicate files to the District Attorney! Ronan will spend the rest of his life in federal prison!"
Ronan chuckled. It was a cold, dark sound that made the hair on the back of Arthur’s neck stand up.
"You think I stayed in this house for ten years out of fear of the D.A., Arthur?" Ronan asked, stepping around the desk. "I stayed because I promised my mother I would make this name clean. But clean does not mean weak."
Ronan snapped his fingers once.

The heavy curtains behind the bookshelf parted. Two men in dark suits stepped out—not thugs, but federal agents wearing golden badges pinned to their lapels.
"Arthur Hale," the lead agent said, holding up a federal arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, racketeering, and attempted extortion."
