Chapter 4 - The Whispering Gallery

The following week brought an uneasy, delicate transformation to the Russo household.
Dominic began changing his schedule. He left for his Manhattan offices earlier in the morning and returned strictly by 5:30 PM every afternoon. He dismissed his armed bodyguards from the main house, ordering them to patrol only the perimeter wall and the outer iron gates.
He sat at the dinner table every night at six o'clock.
At first, the progress was slow. But by Thursday night, something extraordinary happened.
"Look, Papa," Mia said, holding up a small, lumpy piece of pink play-dough.
Dominic looked down at the shape, genuinely bewildered but trying his absolute best. "It's... a horse?"
Mia giggled—a bright, musical sound that filled the grand dining room like sunshine breaking through winter clouds. "No, silly! It's a pig with big ears!"
Dominic let out a laugh—a deep, booming, genuine sound that he hadn't made in over a year. Across the table, Lucia and Valentina joined in, giggling at their father's mistake.
Elena sat quietly at the end of the table, sipping her tea, watching the scene with a soft, contented warmth in her eyes. Her gaze met Dominic’s across the polished table.
For the first time, Dominic didn't look at her with jealousy or suspicion. He looked at her with pure, unadulterated gratitude. He mouthed two silent words across the room:
Thank you.
Elena felt a strange, unexpected flutter in her chest. She quickly looked down at her teacup, her cheeks flushing slightly warm.
The moment of peace was shattered at 9:30 PM that evening.
Dominic was sitting in his study, reviewing financial ledgers, when Arthur—his chief security strategist and intelligence officer—knocked urgently on the door.
Arthur stepped inside, closing the door securely behind him. He looked unusually pale.
"What is it, Arthur?" Dominic asked, setting his pen down.
"We ran a background check on Elena Vasquez, Don Dominic," Arthur reported, placing a thick folder on the desk. "The preliminary identity papers she submitted eight weeks ago were clean. But our secondary deep-sweep of international law enforcement databases just returned a red flag."
Dominic’s eyes narrowed instantly, his warm mood vanishing into thin air. "What kind of red flag?"
"Elena Vasquez isn't just a former housekeeper from Spain," Arthur revealed, opening the file. "Her real name is Elena Vasquez-Moreno. Her father wasn't just a cobbler. He was a high-ranking intelligence officer in the Spanish National Police who was assassinated twelve years ago by the Navarro cartel."
Dominic felt a sudden, icy chill wash over his blood. "Go on."
"Six months ago, Elena filed a formal deposition with the U.S. Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Manhattan," Arthur continued relentlessly. "She provided financial records detailing money laundering operations between European cartels and New York crime families."
Dominic stood up slowly, his face turning into a mask of stone. "Which New York family?"
"The Valenti family," Arthur declared grimly. "And Don Dominic... three days before she applied for the housekeeping job at your estate, she was placed on an informal witness protection watchlist by Federal Prosecutor Marcus Sterling."

Dominic slammed his fist down onto the oak desk, shattering the glass inkwell into a dozen pieces.
"She’s a federal informant," Dominic growled, his voice thick with lethal rage. "She brought federal surveillance to my house... to my daughters."
