Chapter 8 - The Dawn After the Storm

By 5:00 AM, the storm had passed over Long Island, leaving behind a crisp, cool autumn morning.

The estate grounds were secure. Police cruisers and federal vehicles, summoned by Arthur through emergency channels, lined the circular driveway with flashing red and blue lights.

Federal Prosecutor Marcus Sterling stood in the grand sitting room, sipping black coffee, reviewing the tactical reports presented by the State Police captains.

Sitting on the velvet sofa wrapped in a warm wool blanket was Elena. Her neck had been bandaged by paramedics, and she held a hot cup of chamomile tea in her hands.

Sitting tightly around her—refusing to leave her side for even a second—were Mia, Lucia, and Valentina. Mia was sound asleep in Elena’s lap, while Lucia and Valentina leaned against her shoulders, their small hands holding the hem of her cardigan.

Dominic walked into the room, dressed in a fresh charcoal suit. His left cheek bore a neat white bandage, but his posture was straight, commanding, and absolute.

Prosecutor Sterling stood up, extending a hand toward Dominic. "Don Russo."

Dominic looked at the prosecutor’s hand but didn't shake it. "Prosecutor Sterling. I believe you owe Miss Vasquez an apology."

Sterling sighed, setting his coffee cup down. "Miss Vasquez filed a high-risk deposition six months ago regarding the Valenti family’s shipping operations. We failed to provide her with adequate protective surveillance. If it weren't for your security response tonight..."

"My security response tonight happened because Elena Vasquez protected my children with her life," Dominic interrupted sharply. "The Valenti network in New York is completely shattered. Salvatore Moretti’s faction is eliminated. Every piece of financial evidence regarding their illegal port operations will be delivered to your office by my legal team by noon."

Sterling blinked, astonished by the mafia don's sudden cooperation. "You're handing over the Valenti financial ledgers?"

"I am cleaning my house, Prosecutor," Dominic declared, his voice carrying the absolute weight of a king issuing a decree. "The Russo shipping lines are transitioning into a fully legal maritime logistics corporation under Arthur’s management. My family is done with the underworld."

Sterling looked from Dominic to Elena, and then to the three young girls sleeping peacefully against her.

"A full pardon and witness immunity status for Miss Elena Vasquez-Moreno will be signed by the Federal Court before three o'clock," Sterling declared firmly. "Good day, Mr. Russo."

As the federal officers departed the estate, quiet returned to the grand mansion.

Dominic walked over to the sofa, slowly dropping to his knees on the soft rug in front of Elena and his daughters.

Valentina looked up at her father. She didn't shrink away. She didn't look afraid.

She reached out her little hand and gently touched the bandage on his cheek. "Does it hurt, Papa?"

Dominic felt a tear slip down his face. He grabbed his daughter's tiny hand, kissing her palm softly. "Not anymore, Val. Not anymore."

Lucia reached out and wrapped her small arms around Dominic’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder. "You saved us, Papa. You were brave like the wooden bird."

Dominic pulled both of his older daughters into a warm, tight embrace, closing his eyes as the last remnants of his fourteen-month nightmare melted away into pure, unadulterated joy.

Over their heads, his eyes met Elena’s.

Elena smiled—a radiant, beautiful, breathtaking smile that lit up the entire room like the morning sun.
