Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Storm

A fierce autumn storm hit Long Island that night, battering the mansion with driving rain and howling winds that rattled the tall French doors.

Dominic walked down the long, dim hallway toward Elena’s private room in the staff wing. His jaw was set like granite, his right hand gripping a heavy silver letter opener so tightly his knuckles turned white.

He didn't knock. He pushed the door open hard.

Elena was sitting at her small desk, writing in a journal under the warm glow of a desk lamp. She spun around in surprise as Dominic strode into the room, kicking the door shut behind him.

"Mr. Russo?" Elena asked, standing up quickly. "What's wrong? Are the girls—"

Dominic slammed the heavy manila folder onto her desk, sending her papers flying across the floor.

"Who are you working for, Elena?" Dominic spat out, his voice vibrating with absolute fury. "Are you wearing a wire? Are you reporting to Prosecutor Sterling?"

Elena looked at the folder, then looked up into Dominic’s dark, storm-filled eyes. The color drained from her face, but she didn't step back.

"I am not wearing a wire," Elena said, her voice shaking slightly but holding its ground. "And I am not working for the prosecution."

"Lie to me again and I will have you thrown into the Atlantic Ocean before sunrise!" Dominic roared, grabbing her by the arms and pinning her against the edge of the desk.

His large hands held her firmly, his face inches from hers. He could feel her rapid heartbeat, smell the faint scent of lavender soap on her skin, and see the sheer terror—and fierce defiance—in her dark eyes.

"I filed a deposition against the Valenti family six months ago!" Elena gasped out, tears brimming in her eyes. "Because the Valentis built an illegal shipping warehouse fifty yards from the school where I worked in Queens! They brought drugs, guns, and violence into a neighborhood full of innocent children! They killed a twelve-year-old boy in a drive-by shooting!"

She grabbed Dominic’s wrists, her fingers digging into his skin.

"I went to the prosecutors because no one else would stand up to them!" Elena cried out, her voice breaking with raw emotion. "Sterling offered me witness protection, but I refused it! I didn't want their blood money! I took a job here... under my maiden name... because I thought the Russo estate was the safest place in the state! I thought no one would dare come near Dominic Russo's house!"

Dominic stared at her, his breathing heavy and ragged. He looked deep into her eyes, searching for any trace of deceit, forgery, or tactical calculation.

He found none.

All he saw was a brave, broken woman who had spent her entire life running from the same violence that had taken his wife and stolen his daughters' laughter.

Dominic slowly loosened his grip on her arms, taking a step back.

"You brought the Valenti family's attention to my doorstep, Elena," Dominic whispered softly, his voice dark and heavy. "If they find out you are here..."

"They don't know I'm here," Elena wiped a tear from her cheek, her posture straight and proud. "No one knows. I didn't come here to spy on you, Mr. Russo. I don't care about your business, your docks, or your syndicate. I came here to survive. And then... then I met your daughters."

She looked straight into his soul. "I fell in love with Mia, Lucia, and Valentina. I would give my life to protect those girls. If you think I am a threat to them, pull your gun and shoot me now. But do not ever accuse me of using children as a shield."

Dominic stood frozen in the middle of the small room, the rain pouring violently outside the window.

For the first time in his life, Dominic Russo felt completely humbled by a woman who owned nothing but her integrity.

Before he could answer, the mansion's emergency alarm shrieked through the hallways—a deafening, high-pitched horn that signaled a breach of the perimeter gates.
