Chapter 10 - The Song of the Water

One year later.
The small cottage behind the rose garden had been converted into a beautiful, sunlit art studio for Sophia. The main mansion was no longer empty; its twelve bedrooms were now filled with the laughter of children, the scent of fresh baking, and the constant, chaotic presence of Earl, a giant, clumsy golden retriever that Alessandro had bought for Emma’s fourth birthday.
It was a warm, lazy Saturday afternoon.
Alessandro sat on the back porch, a glass of iced tea in his hand, watching Sophia paint. She wore a simple white sundress, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders, her face glowing with a peace she had never thought possible.
Emma was sitting on a wooden stool beside the laundry sink in the garden, her small hands buried in a pile of soapy water as she tried to wash her teddy bear.
"Alessandro!" she called out, her lower lip turning up in a sweet, dramatic pout. "The brown part won't come off!"
Alessandro stood up, walked down the steps, and knelt beside her. He took the soapy teddy bear from her hands, his large, scarred fingers moving gently as he rinsed the dirt from the plush fabric.
"Some stains don't come off, Emma," he said softly, looking up to meet Sophia’s warm, loving gaze from the porch. "But that doesn't mean the toy is ruined. It just means it has a story."
Emma considered this, then reached out and pressed one wet, soapy hand to his cheek, leaving a perfect, frothy print.

"I like our story," she decided, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"Me too, little one," Alessandro whispered, pulling her close as the warm sun washed over them, finally melting the last of the winter’s cold from his heart.
