Chapter 4 - The Ledger of the Lamb

The rain began to fall as Alessandro drove back to the Lake Forest estate, the heavy drops drumming against the windshield of his armored sedan.

His mind was a storm of calculations, ledger entries, and old blood.

Sophia Falcone.

He remembered Frank Falcone. He remembered the night his father had come home with blood on his cuffs, boasting about how he had "pruned the Chicago branch." He had not known Frank had a daughter. He had not known that the quiet, submissive woman who cleaned his floors was the daughter of his father’s victim.

When he reached the mansion, he went straight to the east wing.

The guest suite was quiet, the only sound the steady, rhythmic hiss of the oxygen concentrator. Sophia was awake, her face still pale but her eyes clear. She was sitting up, watching Emma, who had fallen asleep on the small sofa by the window, her thumb still in her mouth.

Sophia looked up as Alessandro entered. She saw the rain on his coat, the dark, terrible gravity in his face, and she knew.

"You found out," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the machine.

Alessandro walked to the side of the bed and sat in the chair. He did not draw his weapon. He did not look angry. He looked incredibly, profoundly tired.

"Why didn't you tell me, Sophia?"

"Because if I told you, you would have had to kill me," she said, a tear rolling down her cheek. "That is the law of your world, isn't it? The sins of the father. My father was a criminal, Mr. Moretti. He was a violent, greedy man who deserved what he got. But I was twelve years old. I didn't want his empire. I wanted to escape it."

"So you came to work for the man whose father killed him?"

"It was the safest place in the world," Sophia said, looking at him with a strange, tragic sincerity. "No one looks for a Falcone in the house of a Moretti. You are the most feared man in New York. If I was under your roof, my father’s old enemies couldn't reach me. And I knew... I knew you were not like your father."

Alessandro let out a short, bitter laugh. "I am the Wolf, Sophia. I have killed men with these hands."

"But you don't enjoy it," she said softly, reaching out to touch his sleeve. Her fingers were warm now, the fever receding. "Your father loved the blood. You only use it to keep the peace. I've watched you for three years, Alessandro. I’ve seen the way you look at the empty rooms in this house. You aren't a wolf. You're just a man guard duty in a graveyard."

Alessandro looked at her hand on his sleeve. It was a small, delicate hand, but it carried a weight that shattered the last of his defenses.

"Dominic has betrayed us," Alessandro said. "He’s allied with Chicago. They know you are here, and they are going to use you to justify a war."

Sophia’s face drained of color. "What... what are we going to do?"

Alessandro covered her hand with his own. "We are going to survive."
