Chapter 6 - The Confession of the Hearth

The fireplace in the guest suite crackled, casting a warm, orange glow across the room. Sophia was sitting in the armchair, wrapped in a thick wool blanket, her color almost fully restored.

She looked at Alessandro as he entered, carrying Emma, who was already half-asleep on his shoulder.

"She won't sleep unless you're nearby," Sophia said with a soft smile. "I think you’ve replaced me as her favorite person."

"She’s a stubborn child," Alessandro said, laying Emma gently onto the bed and pulling the covers over her. "She reminds me of you."

Sophia looked down at her hands. "Alessandro... if this war starts because of me, I will never forgive myself. Let me go to Victor. He wants the Falcone ledger. I know where my father hid it. If I give it to him, he will leave you alone."

"You think he will leave you alive after you give him what he wants?" Alessandro asked, walking over to stand in front of her. "Victor Falcone does not leave loose ends, Sophia. And neither do I."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, tarnished silver key. He placed it in her palm.

"What is this?" she asked, her brow furrowing.

"It’s the key to my mother’s safety deposit box in Zurich," Alessandro said. "There is fifty million dollars in that box, Sophia. Enough to buy a new name, a new life, and a school for Emma in any country in the world."

Sophia looked up, her eyes wide with shock. "Why are you giving this to me?"

"Because if tomorrow does not go well," Alessandro said, his voice dropping to a raw, emotional whisper, "I need to know that you and Emma are safe. I need to know that the only beautiful thing that ever entered this house survives."

Sophia stood up, the blanket slipping from her shoulders. She stepped close to him, so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest, the steady, heavy beat of his heart.

"I don't want Zurich, Alessandro," she said, her voice shaking but resolute. "I don't want a new name. I spent three years running from who I was, but when I looked out that window and saw you coming home every night, I didn't feel like a fugitive. I felt like I was home. If I leave this house, I leave my heart here."

Alessandro stared at her, his breath catching in his throat. The cold, impenetrable armor he had worn since his mother’s death crumbled to dust. He reached out, his large hands cupping her face, and pulled her into a deep, desperate kiss.

It was a kiss filled with twenty-seven years of unshed tears, of blood, of survival, and of a sudden, blinding hope that they might actually have a future.

"I will not let them touch you, Sophia," he murmured against her lips. "I swear it on my mother's grave."
