Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Providence

The grandfather clock in the main mansion struck midnight, its deep, resonant chimes echoing through the empty corridors. In his study, Dominic Hale stood by the window, a glass of amber scotch resting untouched in his hand as he stared out into the darkness of the estate grounds.

The light in the guest cottage was still on. A faint, golden glow spilled from the kitchen window, casting long shadows across the lawn.

The medical emergency earlier that evening had shaken him more than he cared to admit. Dominic was a man accustomed to violence—he knew how to handle bullets, blades, and broken bones. He understood the cold calculus of gang warfare, rival syndicates, and financial leverage. But watching a six-year-old child struggle for air while a mother broke down in helplessness had struck a nerve buried deep beneath years of calculated armor.

The door behind him opened silently.

A tall, sharp-featured man in a dark trench coat stepped inside. It was Marcus, Dominic’s head of security and longtime confidant.

"Boss," Marcus said quietly, closing the door behind him. "The dock shipments from Boston arrived on schedule. No interference from the Rossi family. They’re keeping their heads down after what happened to their warehouses last month."

"Good," Dominic replied without turning around. "And the financial audit?"

"Clean. The wire transfer to Boston Children’s Hospital cleared this afternoon. Dr. Vance’s office confirmed the surgical suite is reserved for next Tuesday morning." Marcus hesitated, shifting his weight. "Boss... if you don't mind me asking. You’ve invested a significant amount of capital and personal attention into nurse Bennett and her kid. Is that wise? The Rossi faction is looking for any leverage they can use against you."

Dominic turned slowly, his dark eyes fixing Marcus with a look that made the seasoned enforcer step back instinctively.

"Leverage works both ways, Marcus," Dominic said softly. "The people who come after me look for weaknesses in boardrooms, bank accounts, and business associates. They look for people who can be bought or broken."

He took a slow sip of his scotch.

"Claire Bennett cannot be bought. And her son is the only reason she breathes. Protecting them isn't a liability, Marcus. It’s a fortress."

Marcus nodded slowly, understanding dawning in his eyes. "Understood. Should I increase the security detail around the north cottage?"

"Double it," Dominic ordered. "I want round-the-clock surveillance. No one gets within five hundred yards of that cottage without my direct authorization."

"Consider it done." Marcus turned to leave, then paused at the door. "One more thing, boss. The older man you cut ties with on Thursday—Arthur Vance. He hasn't left the city. Word on the street is he’s meeting with someone tonight. Someone from out of state."

Dominic’s expression darkened into a mask of pure ice. Arthur Vance had spent thirty years milking the Providence port authority dry through embezzlement and backdoor kickbacks. Dominic had given him a clean exit out of respect for old ties. If Vance chose to turn that exit into a battlefield, he would find out very quickly why Dominic Hale was the last man standing in Rhode Island.

"Let him meet," Dominic murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Let him gather whoever he thinks can help him. When a cornered animal tries to bite, that is the best time to put it down for good."
