Chapter 6 - Whispers in the Corridor

By Monday morning, the tension inside the main Newport estate had reached a boiling point, though it remained entirely invisible to anyone not steeped in its inner workings.

Claire stood in the grand hallway of the main house, adjusting the tray of medication and fresh lemon water for Margaret Hale. Her hands were steady today, fueled by a mixture of fierce determination and the lingering memory of Dominic’s calm competence during Noah’s attack.

"You're smiling," Margaret noted, watching her from her velvet armchair by the bay window.

Claire blinked, realizing the older woman was right. "Am I?"

"You are. It suits you, though it looks entirely out of place in this mausoleum," Margaret chuckled, taking a sip of water. "My son was here last night, wasn't he?"

Claire’s hands froze on the tray. "Mr. Hale checked on the estate perimeter, yes."

"He checked on you, Claire. Don't be dense," Margaret said with affectionate amusement. "Dominic doesn't patrol the northern perimeter himself unless the weather is threatening or his mind is troubled. And his mind is only troubled when someone or something threatens his inner circle."

Before Claire could formulate a diplomatic response, heavy footfalls echoed down the vaulted hallway.

Dominic appeared in the doorway. He was wearing a tailored charcoal suit, a silver silk tie knotted perfectly at his collar, and a dark wool coat draped over his arm. He looked like an executive heading to a high-stakes corporate takeover—which, in his world, was exactly what he was doing every single day.

His dark eyes immediately locked onto Claire.

"Ms. Bennett," he said, his voice cutting cleanly through the quiet room. "A word in the study before I leave for the port."

"Of course, Mr. Hale," Claire replied, turning to Margaret. "I'll be right back, Mrs. Hale."

"Take your time, dear," Margaret grinned mischievously. "My tea isn't going anywhere."

In the study, the heavy door clicked shut behind them, sealing off the rest of the house. Dominic turned to face her, his expression unusually grave.

"The surgery is confirmed for tomorrow morning at 7:00 AM," Dominic stated without preamble. "I have arranged private transport for you and Noah. My car will pick you up at the cottage at 5:30."

Claire felt a wave of overwhelming emotion crash over her. Tears pricked the corners of her eyes, hot and sudden. She had spent two years fighting insurance companies, working triple shifts, and swallowing her own panic, and now—in less than a week—the path ahead was clear.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I... I don't know how to repay you, Mr. Hale."

"You don't need to repay me," Dominic said, stepping closer. The distance between them vanished until she could feel the heat radiating from his broad frame. "You take care of my mother, and you take care of your son. That is the only balance sheet that matters to me."

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, secure mobile phone, placing it directly into her hand. Her fingers brushed against his warm palm.

"This is encrypted," Dominic said quietly. "My private number is speed dial one. If anyone approaches the cottage, if your son’s condition changes by even a fraction, or if you feel unsafe for a single second, you press that button."

Claire looked down at the phone, then up into his dark, unyielding eyes. "Do you expect trouble?"

"In my line of work, Claire, trouble is just a delayed reaction," Dominic said, his jaw tightening. "I am leaving for the downtown docks for three hours. Arthur Vance is making noise, and I intend to finish that conversation permanently. While I am gone, stay inside the estate walls. Do not open the gate for anyone."

A chill ran down Claire’s spine. "Be careful."

Dominic paused, a flicker of genuine surprise crossing his guarded features before he offered a slow, faint nod. "Always, Ms. Bennett."
