Chapter 9 - The Operating Room Doors

The sterile white corridors of Boston Children’s Hospital buzzed with quiet efficiency.

At precisely 6:55 AM, Dominic Hale walked through the sliding glass entrance of the pediatric wing. He wore a dark wool overcoat, his shoulders broad and imposing against the clinical backdrop. Nurses and hospital administrators instinctively stepped aside, recognizing the quiet, undeniable authority radiating from him long before they recognized his face.

Claire was sitting on a plastic chair outside Surgical Suite 4, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, dressed in casual clothes with her hair pulled back. Noah was already inside prep, wearing a tiny hospital gown and clutching his favorite red colored pencil while a friendly pediatric nurse distracted him with stories about spaceships.

When Dominic approached, Claire looked up.

Without a word, Dominic sat down on the empty chair beside her. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, paper cup of hot black coffee, handing it to her.

"Drink," he instructed quietly. "You need your strength."

Claire took the cup, her fingers brushing his. "They're rolling him in in five minutes."

"I know," Dominic said. He looked down the hallway toward the heavy double doors of the operating theater. "Dr. Vance is the finest pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon on the eastern seaboard. Your son is in the best possible hands."

"How do you know that?" Claire asked, a faint, weary smile touching her lips.

Dominic turned his dark eyes toward her, a rare, genuine softness touching his gaze. "Because I checked his credentials the same way I checked yours. I don't leave things to chance, Claire."

Before Claire could reply, the heavy doors of Prep Room B swung open, and a cheerful nurse pushed a small hospital bed down the corridor.

Noah was lying beneath a light blanket, looking small and brave. When he spotted Claire and the tall man in the dark coat standing beside her, his face lit up.

"Mom!" Noah called out, then his eyes drifted to Dominic. "Hey, it's the fire truck guy!"

Dominic stood up, walking over to the side of the bed. He leaned down slightly, resting a large, warm hand gently on Noah’s small shoulder.

"Good morning, Captain," Dominic said, his deep voice carrying a warmth Claire had never heard before. "The doctors are going to fix your engine today so you can draw all the fire trucks you want without getting tired. Sound like a good plan?"

Noah nodded vigorously, his eyes bright. "Yes, sir! Can I draw a helicopter next?"

"Only if it has wings," Dominic replied gravely.

Noah giggled, a sweet, clear sound that echoed down the sterile hospital hallway. Then the nurses wheeled him through the heavy double doors of Surgical Suite 4, and the red light above the door flickered on: IN SURGERY.

Claire sat back down, her hands trembling as she stared at the glowing red sign.

Dominic remained standing beside her chair, tall, silent, and immovable. When Claire’s shoulders began to shake as the tension finally broke, a large, warm hand settled firmly and protectively over her shoulder.
