Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Mansion

The interior of the Moretti estate was a breathtaking display of old-world wealth and fortress-level security. High ceilings, mahogany paneling, priceless oil paintings, and bulletproof glass windows framed the grand foyer. Servants in crisp uniforms moved silently through the hallways, their faces pale, clearly aware that a catastrophe had occurred at the gala.

Luca personally carried Sophia up the grand staircase to her private wing. I walked closely beside them, holding Sophia's hand as she refused to let me drift more than a few feet away.

Her room was massive, decorated in soft pastels, filled with books, stuffed animals, and specialized physical therapy equipment. But despite the luxury, it felt like a gilded cage.

Two top pediatric doctors and Dr. Benton immediately set to work, taking blood samples and conducting preliminary reflex tests. Throughout the entire process, Sophia kept her eyes fixed on me.

"Will you stay?" she asked softly as a nurse bandaged her arm after drawing blood.

"I’m right here, sweetheart," I said, sitting on the edge of her plush bed and smoothing her hair. "I’m not going anywhere tonight."

"You promised in the water," Sophia murmured, her eyelids growing heavy from physical exhaustion. "You said when I woke up, we’d get hot chocolate with the tiny marshmallows."

Tears pricked the back of my eyes. "I remember. I still owe you that hot chocolate."

Within twenty minutes, the sheer physical toll of walking across the ballroom, combined with the emotional shock of the evening, claimed her. Sophia fell into a deep, peaceful sleep, her small chest rising and falling rhythmically.

Luca stood by the door, watching us in silence. He signaled to me with a subtle nod of his head.

I gently eased my hand out of Sophia’s grip, covered her with a warm blanket, and stepped out into the carpeted hallway.

Luca led me down a private corridor to his primary study—a massive, book-lined room dominated by a heavy mahogany desk, leather armchairs, and a bank of security monitors displaying live feeds of the entire estate.

He walked over to a wet bar in the corner, poured two fingers of amber liquid into a crystal tumbler, and held it out to me.

"I don't drink while working, Mr. Moretti," I said politely, declining the glass. "And technically, I’m still on the clock for Harbor Lights Catering."

A faint, ghostly shadow of a smile touched Luca’s lips, though it vanished instantly. He set the glass down on his desk and sat in the heavy leather chair, motioning for me to take the seat across from him.

"Harbor Lights Catering is owned by a subsidiary of my holdings," Luca said flatly. "Consider yourself resigned from tonight. You are now my personal guest."

He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the desk, his dark eyes searching my face.

"Three years ago, Hannah," Luca began, his tone quiet and serious. "I was told my daughter was pulled from the Chicago River by a brave young woman who slipped into the current before emergency crews arrived. I was told that woman drowned before they could revive her. I built a memorial park in Evanston bearing your name."

I blinked, stunned. "A memorial park?"

"The Hannah Carter Recreation Center," Luca said. "Vincent presented me with fake hospital records, a fake death certificate, and proof of funeral costs. He told me he personally managed the arrangements to spare me the grief while I was at Sophia’s bedside in the ICU."

I sat back, my mind reeling. Vincent hadn't just threatened me into silence; he had manufactured my death on paper to ensure Luca would never look for me.

"Why?" I asked, my voice shaking with rising indignation. "Why go to such insane lengths just to keep a waitress away from your family?"

"Because you were an unpredictable variable in a war he was quietly constructing," Luca explained, his voice cold and analytical. "Twenty-four hours after the crash, Vincent launched a retaliatory strike against the Lucchesi crime family. He claimed he had physical evidence that Joseph Lucchesi ordered the hit on my car. We went to war, Hannah. Three years of bloodshed, lost territory, and millions of dollars spent in a vendetta built entirely on my brother's lie."

He stood up, walking toward the grand floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the storm-swept grounds.

"Vincent didn't just want me focused on revenge," Luca continued. "He wanted me distracted. While I was fighting the Lucchesis and spending every night at Sophia's bedside, Vincent was quietly re-routing syndicate assets into private offshore accounts. He was slowly poisoning my daughter to keep me heartbroken, weak, and dependent on him to run the business."

He turned back to face me, his posture radiating a terrifying, absolute authority.

"And then tonight, a seven-year-old girl stood up out of her wheelchair, walked across a ballroom, and shattered three years of carefully crafted illusions with six words."

Before I could reply, the heavy oak door of the study clicked open.

Marco stepped inside, his face pale, holding an encrypted satellite tablet.

"Boss," Marco said, his voice tense. "Dr. Harrison just finished the preliminary rapid toxicology screen on Sophia's blood."

Luca didn't move a muscle. "Tell me."

"The nerve-suppressants prescribed by her team were laced with trace amounts of synthetic paralytics," Marco reported, his fists clenching at his sides. "Not enough to kill her, but enough to block lower-limb synaptic responses completely. If she had stayed on those drugs for another six months, the muscular atrophy would have become irreversible."

Luca didn't shout. He didn't break anything.

He slowly reached out, took his crystal glass of whiskey from the desk, and took a single, slow sip.

"Where is Vincent?" Luca asked softly.

"In the basement vault at the 4th Street facility," Marco replied. "He’s demanding to speak to his legal counsel. He’s claiming the Lucchesis framed him."

"Assemble the inner council," Luca ordered, his voice echoing through the silent study like a death sentence. "Every capo, every lieutenant, and our legal team. We are holding a tribunal at 3:00 AM."

Luca looked at me.

"And bring Miss Carter."
