Chapter 6 - The Counter-Strike

"Stay away from the windows," Luca ordered instantly over the phone, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, tactical calm. "Do not turn on any lights. Get onto the floor beneath the window sill."
I immediately dropped to my knees, crawling against the cold hardwood floor until my back was pressed against the interior wall beneath the front window.
"I got a text," I whispered frantically, my lungs burning. "They sent a picture of my building. They said they're going to kill Sophia if I don't give them the audio recording of Vincent."
"Sophia is safe," Luca replied smoothly. "She is inside a panic vault at the estate guarded by twenty heavily armed men. No one touches my daughter, Hannah. Now listen to me very carefully."
I gripped the phone with white knuckles. "I'm listening."
"The man across your street is a spotter for Joseph Lucchesi's primary enforcement team," Luca explained. "They didn't come to negotiate. They came to eliminate you before my tribunal's findings could be presented to the syndicate’s oversight board tomorrow morning. They think you are an easy target."
A sudden, sharp metallic crack echoed from the alleyway behind my apartment building.
"They're in the back," I gasped, terror spiking through my veins. "Luca, someone just kicked open the fire escape door!"
"I am thirty seconds away," Luca said, the low roar of a high-performance engine suddenly echoing in the background over the phone line. "Hold your ground, Hannah. Do not open that door for anyone."
The heavy oak front door of my apartment rattled violently.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
"Hannah Carter!" a harsh, raspy voice shouted from the hallway outside my door. "Open the door and drop the phone! You have ten seconds before we blow the lock!"
I scrambled backward on my hands and knees, pulling myself into the kitchen nook behind the central counter. My eyes darted around the dark room, frantically looking for anything to use as a weapon. My hand closed around the heavy wooden handle of a chef's knife resting in the drying rack beside the sink.
BANG!
The wooden frame of my front door shattered inward.
Two men in dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns, burst into my apartment. The red laser sights of their weapons swept across the dark living room, cutting through the shadows like crimson needles.
"Check the bedroom!" the lead man barked. "Find her phone and wipe the drives!"
I crouched lower behind the kitchen island, holding my breath, my heart pounding so hard I was certain they could hear it.
One of the men stepped into the kitchen area. The red laser sight swept across the floor, inches from my boots.
Suddenly, the front window of my apartment shattered into ten thousand glittering shards of glass.
A flashbang grenade tumbled through the broken window, bouncing twice across the hardwood floor before exploding in a blinding flash of white light and a deafening, thunderous BOOM!
The two intruders shrieked, clutching their eyes and ears as they stumbled backward in complete disorientation.
Before the smoke could clear, the front door was kicked entirely off its hinges.
Luca Moretti strode into the room like a god of vengeance. He held a suppressed heavy handgun in his right hand.
THWIP. THWIP.
Two muffled gunshots echoed through the dark apartment. The two intruders dropped to the floor instantly, motionless.
Marco and three armed security operatives swept in behind Luca, instantly securing the hallway, the kitchen, and the fire escape exit.
Luca stepped over the fallen men, his eyes scanning the smoke-filled room until they landed on me crouched behind the kitchen counter, holding a chef's knife.
He lowered his weapon, stepped into the kitchen, and extended his hand to me.
"Are you hurt?" Luca asked gently, his voice remarkably steady amidst the chaos.
I looked at his outstretched hand, then at the two men on my floor, and slowly let go of the knife. It clattered against the linoleum.
"I'm... I'm okay," I managed to say, my voice a ragged whisper as I took his hand. He pulled me up smoothly, pulling me into the safety of his side.
"Clean this up," Luca ordered Marco coldly. "Trace their comms. I want Joseph Lucchesi's exact safehouse location within ten minutes."
"Already on it, Boss," Marco replied, searching the fallen men's tactical vests. "They were using encrypted short-range radios synced to a command van parked two blocks north."
Luca looked down at me. His suit jacket was damp from the rain, his dark hair slightly windswept, but his expression was entirely focused on my safety.
"They have crossed the final line," Luca said softly, his fingers gently brushing a small flake of broken window glass from my coat collar. "They came into your home. They threatened my daughter. Tonight, the Lucchesi family ceases to exist in Chicago."

He turned me toward the exit.
"You are coming back to the estate, Hannah. Permanently, if necessary. You will never be unprotected again."
