Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

Three weeks passed.
The sudden, total collapse of the Lucchesi crime syndicate sent shockwaves through the Midwest underground. Within seventy-two hours, Joseph Lucchesi and his primary lieutenants were stripped of their assets, their operations seized, and their influence wiped out completely. Chicago had a new, unchallenged sovereign: Luca Moretti.
Publicly, the newspapers reported that a massive federal investigation had brought down the Lucchesi empire, while the sudden disappearance of Vincent Moretti was attributed to an "ongoing corporate fraud investigation."
The city moved on, oblivious to the quiet war that had reshaped its underworld.
For me, life transformed at a dizzying speed.
I moved out of my small Pilsen apartment and into a breathtaking, light-filled penthouse in downtown Chicago—a property secured and fortified by Luca’s private real estate firm.
As promised, the legal ownership of Harbor Lights Catering was transferred entirely into my name. With the support of Luca’s corporate advisors, I reorganized the company, firing the corrupt supervisors who had mistreated staff, raising wages, and securing exclusive contracts with the city's premier venues.
Yet, despite my newfound wealth and independence, my days were inextricably tied to the Moretti Estate.
Every afternoon at 3:00 PM, a black sedan arrived at my penthouse to take me to Bear Mountain Estate.
Sophia’s physical recovery was nothing short of miraculous. Without the paralyzing drugs in her system, and with the emotional trauma of her past finally healed, her body responded to physical therapy at an astonishing rate. Within twenty days, she surrendered her wheelchair entirely, moving first to forearm crutches, and finally to walking independently with only light ankle braces.
On a crisp, sunny afternoon in late October, I sat on a bench in the private courtyard of the Moretti estate, watching Sophia kick a soccer ball across the lush green lawn toward a small net.
Dr. Benton stood nearby, holding a clipboard, shaking her head in utter disbelief.
"In twenty years of pediatric physical therapy," Dr. Benton remarked, sitting beside me on the bench, "I have never witnessed a recovery like this. It isn't just medical, Hannah. It's psychological. You gave that child her will to fight back."
"She gave it to herself," I smiled, watching Sophia score a goal and do a small, triumphant dance on the grass. "She’s a Moretti."
"Speaking of the Morettis," Dr. Benton said softly, casting a subtle glance toward the terrace above.
I looked up.
Luca was standing on the second-floor balcony, dressed in a tailored navy suit, holding a cup of espresso. His eyes weren't on the lake, nor were they on the security monitors.
They were fixed entirely on me.
When our eyes met, he offered a slow, genuine smile—a smile that transformed his harsh, dangerous face into something striking, warm, and intensely handsomeness.
My heart did a strange, fluttery flip in my chest.
Over the past three weeks, the terrifying mob boss had revealed a side reserved exclusively for his daughter and me. He was attentive, remarkably intelligent, fiercely protective, and deeply gentle. Every evening, he insisted I stay for dinner, where we spent hours talking about art, literature, business, and my dreams for the catering company.
"He looks at you," Dr. Benton murmured with a knowing smile, "like a man who has finally found solid ground after twenty years at sea."
Before I could answer, Sophia came running across the grass, her short legs moving with steady, joyful confidence.
"Hannah! Look!" she shouted, holding up a bright pink soccer ball. "I kicked it into the top corner three times!"
I knelt down as she reached the bench, pulling her into a warm hug. "I saw! You’re going to be in the World Cup by the time you're twelve!"
"Daddy said if I keep practicing, we can build a real soccer field near the lake," Sophia giggled. She then leaned in, whispering into my ear: "And he said he has a big surprise for you tonight."

I blinked, looking down at her. "A surprise? What kind of surprise?"
Sophia pressed her small fingers against her lips, shaking her head frantically. "I promised I wouldn't tell! But it’s shiny!"
