Chapter 6 - The Siege at the Refinery

The abandoned sugar refinery on the East River loomed like a rotting concrete skeleton against the black water. Freezing mist rolled off the river, wrapping the rusted metal staircases in a ghostly shroud.

Inside the cavernous central bay, a single overhead bulb cast a harsh yellow glow over a wooden chair where little Lily sat bound with heavy nylon zip-ties, a piece of gray duct tape across her mouth. Her eyes were red from crying, but she wasn't making a sound—just as her mother had taught her to be strong when the world turned dark.

Victor Moretti stood a few feet away, leaning against a steel pillar, twirling a heavy hunting knife between his calloused fingers. Three of his armed thugs stood near the doors, their shotguns resting casually on their shoulders.

"He's coming," Frankie muttered, checking his watch. "Conti never backs down from a fight."

"Let him come," Moretti laughed, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "When he walks through that door to sign over the docks, we put two bullets in him, bury him in the foundation, and take the city back."

Heavy iron doors at the end of the hall groaned open.

Footsteps echoed—slow, deliberate, rhythmic.

Rafael Conti walked into the light alone. He wore his dark overcoat, his hands empty and visible at his sides. He didn't look like a man walking into an execution trap; he looked like an executioner coming to collect a debt.

"Moretti," Rafael’s voice cut through the damp air like a razor. "You're a coward, Victor. Taking a child to fight your battles?"

Moretti sneered, stepping forward and pressing the blade of his knife lightly against Lily’s cheek, drawing a tiny bead of crimson. "Drop the papers, Conti! Sign the transfer over to me, or the kid gets it right now!"

Lily whimpered softly behind the tape, her eyes locked on Rafael.

Rafael stopped twenty feet away. He looked at Lily, then at Moretti. A faint, cold smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"You think I came here alone, Victor?" Rafael asked softly.

Moretti frowned, glancing toward the doors. "There's nobody out there. You walked in through the front."

"I walked through the front," Rafael replied smoothly. "Because my men didn't need to use the doors."

CRASH!

Glass shattered overhead as specialized tactical charges blew the rusted skylights wide open. Three flashbang grenades dropped through the smoke, detonating with blinding white light and deafening concussive roars that shook the entire refinery!

Moretti shrieked, stumbling backward and dropping his knife as the room erupted into chaos.

Before Moretti’s guards could even raise their shotguns, Marcus and six of Rafael’s elite operatives descended from the rafters on heavy tactical ropes, neutralizing the guards with precise, non-lethal synchronized strikes.

Rafael moved with blinding speed. He vaulted over a rusted metal crate, tackled Moretti to the concrete floor, and pinned the older boss with his knee pressed hard against Moretti’s chest, pressing the cold barrel of his pistol directly between Moretti’s eyes.

"Touch her again," Rafael whispered, his voice trembling with suppressed rage, "and I won't wait for a trial."
