Chapter 8 - The Green Hills of Vermont

The transition to Vermont felt like stepping into another dimension.

The estate in Burlington sat on forty acres of rolling green hills, bordered by ancient sugar maples and a sparkling, crystal-clear trout stream. The air was crisp, clean, and smelled of pine needles and damp earth.

Toby was running across the lawn—actually running, without his inhaler or his chest rattling—chasing a golden retriever puppy that Rafael had arranged to have delivered on their first day.

Marina stood on the wide wooden porch of the farmhouse, holding a mug of steaming coffee, watching the golden sunlight wash over the valley. The past year felt like a distant, hazy nightmare. The federal trials in New York had concluded with the total collapse of Moretti’s syndicate, and Rafael Conti had quietly restructured his holdings into legitimate international shipping and philanthropic foundations, stepping away from the shadows of the underworld entirely.

He didn'enda up in prison, nor did he rule the streets anymore. Men of his intelligence knew when to turn the page.

A sleek black SUV pulled up the gravel driveway, kicking up a light cloud of dust.

The driver’s door opened, and Rafael stepped out. He wasn't wearing his usual dark syndicate overcoat. Instead, he wore a simple tweed jacket, an open-collared shirt, and leather boots. He looked older, perhaps calmer, the lines of constant vigilance around his eyes softened by the mountain air.

Lily dropped her toy shovel in the sandbox and sprinted across the grass. "Mr. Conti!" she shouted, throwing her arms around his waist.

Rafael knelt down, catching her easily, a genuine, unforced smile breaking across his face as he lifted her into the air. "Hello, Lily. Did you finish your arithmetic homework?"

"All of it!" Lily beamed. "And I got a gold star for honesty in history class!"

Rafael set her down gently and walked up the wooden steps toward the porch where Marina stood waiting. He stopped a few feet away, holding a small leather-bound book in his hand.

"Passing through?" Marina asked, her heart skipping a beat the way it always did when he was near.

"Never just passing through," Rafael replied, his dark eyes warm. "I came to check on my investment."

He handed her the book. Marina opened it. Inside the cover was a handwritten note in neat, elegant cursive: To Marina and Lily, who taught a hard man the value of a clean conscience.

"You didn't have to do all this, Rafael," Marina said softly, looking out over the valley where Toby was laughing with the puppy.

"I didn't have a choice," Rafael answered, his voice dropping into a quiet, intense sincerity. "For thirty-eight years, I thought I owned everything worth having. But the only thing I ever truly wanted was something money couldn't buy—a place where I didn't have to look over my shoulder, and people who cared about me for who I am, not what I control."

Marina stepped closer, placing her hand gently over his. Her skin was warm, steady, and unafraid.
