Chapter 7 - The Aftermath and the Oath

The police sirens wailed in the distance, but by the time the authorities arrived at the East River refinery, Moretti and his surviving men were bound securely in industrial zip-ties, waiting for the federal marshals to haul them away on RICO indictments that would keep them behind bars until the end of their days.
Inside the warm leather interior of Rafael’s departing sedan, Lily sat safely on Marina’s lap. Marina was holding her daughter so tightly she was practically trembling, kissing her forehead over and over again.
Lily looked down at her hand. The silver rabbit charm was gone, but Rafael reached into his coat pocket and placed a brand-new, polished silver rabbit charm right into her small palm.
"I'm sorry about your charm," Rafael said quietly, his voice gentle as he looked at the little girl. "I'll make sure it never happens again."
Lily looked up at the fearsome mafia boss, her big, innocent eyes unclouded by fear. She smiled, closed her fingers tightly around the charm, and leaned her head against her mother's shoulder, drifting off to sleep.
Marina looked across the car at Rafael. The harsh streetlights flickered against his sharp features, highlighting the exhaustion and the absolute, unbreakable resolve in his eyes.
"You risked everything tonight," Marina said softly, her voice steady. "Your empire, your safety... for us."
Rafael turned his head, meeting her gaze. "When she ran after my car in the rain, Mrs. Cole, she didn't know who I was. She didn't know I was dangerous. She only knew what was right. In my world, people like that don't survive long unless someone stands in front of them."
He reached into his pocket and slid a small, heavy gold key across the velvet armrest toward Marina.
"What is this?" Marina asked, picking it up.
"The deed to a quiet estate in Vermont," Rafael said simply. "Far away from New York, far away from the docks, and far away from men like Moretti. A place where Toby can grow up breathing mountain air, and Lily can go to a school where she doesn't have to look over her shoulder."
Marina stared at the key. She looked at Lily, sleeping peacefully against her chest, and then back at Rafael. "You're sending us away?"
"I'm giving you peace," Rafael said, looking out the tinted window as the Manhattan skyline faded into the night. "And in return, I ask only one thing."
May you like
"What's that?"
"Tell her," Rafael said quietly, a faint, rare smile touching his lips, "to keep telling the truth. The world needs at least one person who can't be bought."
