Chapter 10 - The Vow on the Water

That evening, a private yacht slipped quietly out of the harbor, gliding through the dark, calm waters toward the Statue of Liberty.
The city skyline glowed in the background—a sea of gold, blue, and silver lights reflecting on the water. On the upper deck, small fairy lights danced in the cool breeze.
Sophie was fast asleep in the main cabin below, tucked into a plush bed with her brown bear resting securely on the pillow beside her.
On the open deck, Elena stood by the brass railing, watching the reflection of the moon on the waves. She wore a soft cream wrap around her shoulders to guard against the evening chill.
Matteo walked up behind her, holding two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed one to her, his fingers brushing against hers—a touch that no longer brought doubt or fear, only a deep, settled peace.
"She played brilliantly today," Matteo said softly, looking out at the skyline. "Her teacher told me she has the potential to tour internationally by the time she's twelve."
"She gets her discipline from you," Elena said with a small laugh, sipping her drink. "And her stubbornness."
"And her beauty and soul from her mother," Matteo countered gently.
Elena turned to look at him. The wind caught a few strands of her hair, blowing them across her face. Matteo reached out, gently tucking them behind her ear, his hand lingering against her cheek.
"Seven years ago," Elena murmured, "I thought my life was over. I thought I was doomed to spend the rest of my days hiding in the dark, barely scraping by, hating the man I had given my heart to."
"And now?" Matteo asked, his gray eyes searching hers with a rare, quiet vulnerability.
Elena smiled—a warm, radiant smile that illuminated the dark deck. She reached out, taking his heavy hand and placing it over her heart.
"Now," she whispered, "I know that the dark was just a long tunnel. And you brought us into the sun."
Matteo set his glass down on the railing. He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box. He didn't drop to his knee like a mobster making a theatrical gesture, nor did he offer a contract stamped with corporate seals.
He simply opened the box, revealing a simple, exquisite ring—a flawless diamond set in platinum, surrounded by two small gray sapphires that matched the exact color of their daughter's eyes.
"No lieutenants," Matteo said, his voice thick with profound emotion. "No empires. No shadows. Just a man who loves you more than life itself, asking if he can spend the rest of his days making up for the time we lost."
Elena looked at the ring, then up into the gray eyes of the man who had torn down a kingdom to save her and their child.

"Yes," Elena whispered, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes. "Yes, Matteo. Always."
Matteo slipped the ring onto her finger, pulled her close into his arms, and kissed her under the vast, starlit sky of New York—the city where a little girl had once walked into a tower, looked a giant in the eyes, and taught him how to love again.
