Chapter 6 - Rebuilding the Ashes

The aftermath of the Plaza revelation sent shockwaves through the New York underworld and high society alike. Within forty-eight hours, every lieutenant who had harbored secret sympathies for Nico surrendered their ledgers to Marco without a single shot being fired.
Matteo Caruso had not only exposed a snake within his own house; he had solidified his power beyond anything his father had ever achieved. But inside his heart, the victory felt entirely hollow.
Three days after the gala, Matteo stood in the living room of a grand, historic brownstone in the West Village—just four blocks from where he and Elena had used to meet at the jazz bar years ago.
The brownstone was fully renovated, featuring a massive private garden in the back, state-of-the-art security, and a stunning parlor with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a tree-lined street. At the center of the parlor sat a pristine, restored Steinway grand piano—the exact model Elena had loved as a young music student.
Elena walked through the parlor, her fingers lightly trailing over the polished mahogany of the piano. Sophie was out in the back garden with Sal, who was surprisingly good at playing hide-and-seek, despite weighing two hundred and fifty pounds.
"It's yours," Matteo said, standing near the doorway, his hands in his pockets. "The deed is in your name, Elena. No Caruso conditions attached. You can live here with Sophie. I’ve funded a private security team that will guard the perimeter from two blocks away—you won't even see them."
Elena turned around, looking at him thoughtfully. She wore a simple white sweater and jeans, looking remarkably like the woman he had fallen in love with seven years ago, though the lines around her eyes held a new, mature gravity.
"And where will you be, Matteo?" she asked gently.
"Caruso Tower," he replied. "Or the estate in Long Island. I will visit Sophie whenever you permit it. Once a week, once a month... whatever you decide is best for her."
Elena walked over to the piano bench and sat down. She struck a single chord—a deep, resonant C-major that filled the vast room with beautiful, lingering tone.
"Six years ago, I hated you," Elena said softly, staring at the white and black keys. "I spent every night thinking of ways to tell you how much you had hurt me. When Sophie walked into your tower, I was terrified you would take her away or dispose of us both."
"I would have torn my own heart out before harming either of you," Matteo said, his voice raw.
"I know that now," Elena said, looking up at him. Her gray eyes—so like his own—were clear, searching his face. "I saw how you looked at Nico in that alley. I saw the pain in your eyes when you realized what was done to us. You aren't a monster, Matteo. But you live in a monster's world."
Matteo bowed his head slightly. "I cannot undo who I am, Elena. I cannot erase the blood on my hands or the name I carry."
"No," Elena agreed softly. "You can't. But you can decide what that name means for Sophie. And... for us."
Matteo looked up, a sudden spark of hope igniting in his chest. "What are you saying?"
"I'm saying," Elena said, a tiny, genuine smile finally breaking across her face, "that the kitchen upstairs needs groceries. And Sophie wants her father to show her how to ride a bicycle in the park this weekend. If you think you can handle that without sending a tactical team ahead of us."

Matteo let out a short, breathy laugh—a sound he hadn't made in so long it felt entirely foreign in his throat.
"I think," Don Matteo Caruso said, walking over to stand beside her at the piano, "I can manage that."
