Chapter 7 - The Unseen Threads

Months passed, and the rhythm of life slowly shifted.

The transition was far from seamless. Elena was determined not to lose her independence. She refused to live off a allowance, instead establishing a non-profit music foundation funded by the Caruso trust that provided free instruments and classical lessons to underprivileged children across the city.

Matteo watched her work with an awe that bordered on reverence. While he commanded men through fear and financial leverage, Elena commanded respect through sheer grace and unyielding purpose.

However, the shadow of Matteo’s world was never entirely absent.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, while Matteo was attending a board meeting at Caruso Tower, Marco entered the conference room without knocking. He walked straight to the head of the table and whispered two words into Matteo's ear:

"The Commission."

Matteo's eyes narrowed. He stood up immediately, dismissing the board of executives with a brief wave of his hand.

Inside his private office, Marco laid out a series of intercepted intelligence reports.

"The old bosses—specifically Don Moretti from the Brooklyn family—are restless," Marco explained. "When you publicly disgraced Nico and transferred half your non-syndicate assets into a civilian trust for Sophie, you broke traditional Commission protocols. They view your sudden shift toward legitimacy as a sign of weakness."

"Weakness?" Matteo scoffed, leaning against his desk. "I destroyed my own cousin in front of two hundred people. How is that weakness?"

"They think you've grown soft because of the girl and her mother," Marco said quietly. "Moretti called an emergency meeting of the Five Families for tomorrow night at the docks in Red Hook. They want to demand a twenty percent tariff on your shipping lines to 'guarantee peace' now that you've diverted family capital into private trusts."

Matteo’s jaw set. The cold, lethal air that used to define him swept back into the room in an instant.

"They think I bought a brownstone and forgot how to fight," Matteo said softly.

"What are your orders, Don Matteo?"

Matteo walked to his window, staring down at the tiny cars moving through the rain-soaked streets below. He thought of Sophie, who had learned how to ride her bike in Central Park last Sunday without training wheels, holding onto his suit jacket for balance. He thought of Elena, who had played Coltrane's Dear Lord on her new piano while he sat on the couch with a cup of coffee, feeling peace for the first time in his life.

"Tell Moretti I will attend the meeting," Matteo said. "And tell him to bring his accountants. Because I am not paying a single cent of tariff. In fact... I am buying Brooklyn."
