Chapter 10 - A New Account

Six months later, the dark clouds that had hung over Valente Tower had completely dissipated, replaced by a bright, crisp Chicago spring.

The Vale scandal had played out exactly as negotiated. Chief Justice Thomas Vale had retired early due to "cardiac health complications," and Dr. Adrien Vale had quietly disappeared from the medical registry, reportedly checked into a private psychiatric facility in the high deserts of New Mexico. The public thought it was a tragic fall from grace for a prominent family; only a select few knew it was a tactical execution by the Valente empire.

Inside the executive suite of Valente Tower, the atmosphere had transformed. The heavy, formal silence was gone, replaced by the soft hum of jazz music playing from the reception desk.

Arya Monroe sat behind her large glass desk, wearing a stunning lavender dress that showed her bare shoulders—completely clear of any marks, her skin glowing and flawless. She was reviewing the construction plans for the new Monroe Shelter for Domestic Survivors, a multi-million-dollar charity project fully funded by the Valente Foundation.

The door to the inner office opened, and Matteo Valente stepped out. He had abandoned his usual stiff black suit jacket, wearing only a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. On his wrists were a pair of brilliant, custom silver cufflinks shaped like small roses.

Arya looked up, a radiant, genuine smile breaking across her face—a smile that no longer had to hide behind a professional mask.

“The contractors for the shelter just approved the final blueprint, Matteo,” she said, her voice warm and melodic. “We open the doors in October.”

Matteo walked over to her desk, leaning against the edge, his eyes fixed on her with a devotion that had only deepened over the months. “Good. Make sure they use the highest security systems available. I don't want a single woman in that building feeling like the world can reach her.”

“I already handled it,” Arya smiled, rising from her chair. She stepped into his space, her hands naturally reaching up to adjust the collar of his shirt. “I am the executive secretary, remember? I don't miss details.”

Matteo’s hands came up to wrap gently around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. For eleven months, he had kept his distance, but now, every touch was a promise of protection and permanence.

“You aren't just my secretary anymore, Arya,” Matteo murmured, his voice dropping into that low, intimate register that belonged only to her. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box, placing it in her hands.

Arya’s breath caught. She opened the box to find a simple, elegant band of platinum, set with a single, flawless sapphire that matched the deep blue of the Chicago night sky. It wasn't loud or arrogant like the diamond Adrien had forced on her; it was subtle, strong, and unbreakable.

“This isn't a shackle, Arya,” Matteo said, his eyes burning with absolute sincerity. “This is a choice. If you wear it, it means you never have to fight alone again. It means my empire is your shield, and my heart is your home.”

Tears of pure happiness welled in Arya’s eyes. She didn't look at the ring; she looked up at the man who had looked past her professional mask to see her pain, the man who had risked his entire kingdom to give her freedom.

“Put it on me,” she whispered.

Matteo took the ring from the box, his large, scarred fingers incredibly gentle as he slid the band onto her finger. It fit perfectly.

Arya leaned up on her tiptoes, wrapping her arms around his neck, and pressed her lips to his. The kiss was deep, passionate, and filled with the relief of a long-awaited storm finally clearing. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the lights of Chicago sparkled like a million stars, but inside the tower, the most feared man in the city had finally found the only thing worth conquering.
