Chapter 4 - The Golden Cage

For the next three days, Arya lived in a state of high-intensity exhaustion.
Matteo was uncharacteristically demanding. He scheduled back-to-back acquisition meetings, demanded revisions on international shipping contracts that were already finalized, and kept her at her desk until well past 10:00 p.m. every night.
Arya didn't complain. In fact, Matteo noticed a strange sense of relief in the way she threw herself into the workload. Inside the fortified walls of Valente Tower, under the watchful eyes of Matteo's security detail, she was safe. Adrien couldn't touch her here.
On Friday evening, as the rain lashed against the windows of the executive suite, Arya walked into Matteo's office carrying a stack of revised financial ledgers. Her face was pale, dark circles bruising the skin under her eyes, but her posture remained impeccably straight.
“The Q3 logistics reports are finished, Mr. Valente,” she said, placing them on his desk. She checked her watch, her fingers twitching slightly. “If there is nothing else, I... I need to leave. Adrien is picking me up in twenty minutes for the Lake Forest dinner.”
Matteo didn't look up from his tablet. “You’re not finished, Arya. The maritime insurance clauses for the New Jersey docks need an audit. I need it by tomorrow morning.”
Arya froze. “Mr. Valente, I told you weeks ago about this dinner. It’s his family's formal announcement. His father will be there. If I’m late, Adrien will—” She cut herself off, her breath hitching.
Matteo finally raised his eyes. The cold, corporate mask he had been wearing for three days softened, revealing the dangerous predator beneath. “If you’re late, what will he do, Arya?”
“Please,” she whispered, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. “Don't do this. I know what you’re trying to do. You’re keeping me here to protect me. But you don't understand him. Isolation makes him worse. If I don't show up, he won't lose his temper at his father's house. He’ll wait until we are alone in his apartment.”
Matteo rose slowly from his chair, his imposing frame casting a long shadow over the desk. He walked around the perimeter until he stood only inches away from her. The scent of her—rainwater and subtle vanilla—hit him, mixing with the dark adrenaline in his veins.
“Then don't go back to his apartment,” Matteo said, his voice a low, seductive command. “Stay here. In the tower. I have a residential suite on the penthouse level. No one enters without my biometric clearance. Not even the police.”
Arya looked up at him, her lower lip trembling. For a second, he saw the desperate desire in her eyes to just collapse against his chest and let him carry the weight of her world. But then, the fear returned.
“And when his father files a kidnapping charge? When the FBI raids this building because the Supreme Court Justice thinks a mafia boss stole his son’s fiancée?” Arya shook her head, a tear finally escaping and tracing a path down her cheek. “You can't keep me in a golden cage, Matteo. The world outside still belongs to them.”

Before Matteo could answer, the internal intercom on his desk buzzed. Marco’s voice broke the silence.
“Boss, we have a problem. Dr. Vale is downstairs in the lobby. He bypassed security using his father’s judicial escort credentials. He’s coming up to the executive floor right now.”
