Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

At 11:45 p.m., the elevator to the Valente Tower penthouse opened.
Chief Justice Vale stepped out, looking ten years older. Behind him was Adrien Vale. The young surgeon was no longer wearing a bespoke tuxedo; he looked disheveled, his eyes wild with a mixture of terror, humiliation, and residual rage. His hands were shaking.
Arya stood beside Matteo in the living room, her hand resting firmly in Matteo’s grasp. For the first time, she didn't hide behind him. She stood tall, her eyes fixed on the man who had terrorized her for months.
“Sign it,” Justice Vale said, slamming a stack of legal documents onto the coffee table. His voice was completely devoid of affection for his son. “Sign it, Adrien, or I swear to God I will disown you before the clock strikes twelve.”
Adrien looked at the papers—the confession of abuse, the voluntary surrender of his medical license, and the non-molestation agreement. He looked up at Arya, his teeth grinding.
“You absolute bitch,” Adrien spat, stepping forward. “You ruined my life for a piece of mafia trash? You think he loves you? He’s a criminal! He’ll use you until—”
Before Adrien could finish the sentence, Matteo moved.
He didn't draw a gun. He simply stepped forward and struck Adrien across the face with an open hand. The force of the blow echoed through the penthouse, sending the surgeon sprawling across the hardwood floor, his lip splitting open, blood staining his white shirt.
Matteo stood over him, his expression terrifyingly calm. “Speak to her again, and I will tear your tongue out of your throat. Pick up the pen.”
Adrien looked up at his father, but the old judge turned his back, refusing to look at his son. Realizing he was entirely alone, stripped of his privilege and his power, Adrien crawled to the table, picked up the pen with trembling fingers, and signed his name on the dotted line.
He threw the pen down, his eyes filled with tears of pure malice. “Are you happy now, Arya?”
Arya walked forward, stopping just two steps away from him. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the massive diamond engagement ring he had forced onto her finger. She dropped it onto the floor. It bounced once, rolling into the pool of blood from his split lip.

“I am free, Adrien,” she said, her voice clear, strong, and beautiful. “Get out of my city.”
Justice Vale grabbed his son by the shoulder, dragging him toward the elevator without a word. The doors closed, removing the filth from their lives forever.
