Chapter 8 - Unmasked Loyalties

With Vance captured and his syndicate dismantled, the immediate threat vanished, but the wound inside Kieran’s organization remained.
Two days after the ironworks rescue, Meredith sat in her technical suite, reviewing the digital access logs from the night of the gala. Something didn't add up. The override code used to cut the primary breakers at the estate wasn't breached from the outside; it was authorized using Bryce’s personal clearance key.
Meredith called Kieran directly. "Come to my office. Now."
Ten minutes later, Kieran stepped into the room, followed by Bryce.
"What did you find?" Kieran asked.
Meredith turned the monitor toward them. "Bryce didn't betray you, Kieran. But his phone was cloned three weeks ago during a meeting at the downtown harbor. Someone copied his security token."
Bryce looked shocked. "That’s impossible. I never leave my phone unattended."
"Except when you visit your brother at the harbor club," Meredith said quietly, opening a second video file. "Your brother was deep in gambling debt to Vance. He traded your access codes to clear his balance."
Bryce went pale, dropping to his knees before Kieran. "Boss... I swear on my life, I didn't know. I swear—"
Kieran looked down at his long-time lieutenant, his expression heavy with disappointment. "You brought a viper into our home, Bryce. Intentional or not, you endangered my family."
"Wait," Meredith intervened, standing between Kieran and Bryce. "Bryce didn't sell you out. He was used. If you eliminate every person who makes a mistake out of love for their family, you'll end up completely alone in this tower."
Kieran looked at Meredith, the tension in his shoulders slowly unwinding. She was the only person in the world brave enough to stand between him and his judgment, and she did it not out of fear, but out of absolute moral clarity.
"Bryce," Kieran said coldly. "You are relieved of security duties. You will manage the shipping docks in Seattle starting tomorrow. If you ever return to Chicago, we will not have this conversation again."
Bryce bowed his head in deep gratitude, leaving the room silently.
Kieran closed the door behind him and turned to Meredith. He walked over to her desk, reaching out to gently touch the small bandage on her cheek where Vance had hit her.
"You saved my sister, you saved my life, and now you saved my soul from making another terrible mistake," Kieran said, his voice rich with emotion. "How am I supposed to pay you back for all of this?"
May you like
"You don't have to pay me," Meredith murmured, her breath catching as Kieran stepped closer, closing the distance between them.
"Then let me care for you," Kieran whispered, resting his forehead against hers. "No more running from your past, Meredith. Stay with me."
