Chapter 3 - The Web of Deceit

Alessandro did not pick up the device. He left it exactly where it was, walking back to the mansion with his hands in his pockets, his mind analyzing the situation with cold, calculating precision.

He went straight to his private study and locked the door.

"Marco," he said into his secure radio. "Get in here. Now."

Thirty seconds later, Marco entered, his hand instinctively resting near his holster. "What's wrong, boss?"

"We have a leak," Alessandro said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "And it’s inside the house."

He explained the tracking device he had found near the oak tree, and how Elena had conveniently appeared right after her daughter wandered onto his chest.

Marco’s face darkened. "Elena? But Carlo personally vetted her. Her husband’s death, the medical debt... it was all verified."

"Then whoever planted her has resources deep enough to falsify federal records," Alessandro said. "Or... Carlo didn't actually vet her."

The implication hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating fog. Carlo Ricci had been the backbone of the Moretti household for fifteen years. If Carlo was compromised, then every security camera, every motion sensor, and every safehouse they owned was a trap.

"I don't want to believe it," Marco said, his voice tight with emotion. "Carlo was there when your father died, Alessandro. He practically raised us after Salvatore was gone."

"Belief is a luxury we can't afford, Marco," Alessandro said coldly. "We don't accuse him yet. If Carlo is the traitor, he's working with someone bigger. The Sabatinis are gone, but their allies—the Lucchese family in Brooklyn—have been looking for a way to seize our docks for years. If they get their hands on our logistics network, we’re finished."

"What do you want me to do?"

"Keep Elena under constant surveillance," Alessandro ordered. "But do not let her know we are watching. Let her think her cover is perfect. I want to know every call she makes, every text she sends, and everyone she interacts with inside this house. And Marco?"

"Yeah, boss?"

"If she tries to use her daughter as a shield again... you remove the child before we take care of the mother. The kid is innocent."

Marco nodded grimly. "Understood."

For the next three days, the Moretti estate became a silent chessboard. Alessandro watched Carlo’s every move, looking for a slip, a hesitation, a secret phone call. But the older man remained as flawless and efficient as ever, managing the household with his usual quiet grace.

But the tension was taking its toll on Alessandro. He found himself walking the halls late at night, his hand always on his weapon. On the third night, as he passed the kitchen hallway near the servants' wing, he heard a soft whimpering sound.

He stopped, his hand sliding into his coat.

He pushed the door to the pantry open. There, sitting on the floor in the dark, was Mia. She was clutching a ragged teddy bear, her small face streaked with tears.

"Mia?" Alessandro whispered, his voice softer than he intended.

The little girl looked up, her tear-filled eyes widening when she recognized him. "Mr. Monster," she whispered.

Alessandro blinked. "What did you call me?"

"Mommy said you are the monster who lives in the castle," Mia sniffled, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "But you're not a monster. You're warm."

Alessandro’s chest tightened. He knelt down on the cold floor, looking at the tiny girl. "Why are you crying, Mia?"

"Mommy is crying," Mia said, her voice trembling. "A bad man on the phone made her cry. He said if she doesn't do the bad thing, they will make me go away forever. I don't want to go away."

Alessandro’s gray eyes flared with a lethal, blinding fury. He knew exactly what the "bad thing" was. They were blackmailing Elena, using her daughter's life to force her to betray him.

He reached out, his large, scarred hand gently wiping a tear from Mia's cheek. "No one is going to make you go away, Mia. I promise you."

May you like

"Pinky promise?" she asked, holding out her tiny pinky finger.

Alessandro stared at the little finger, then slowly wrapped his own large pinky around hers. "Pinky promise."
