Chapter 2 - The Iron Contract

"You are out of your mind, Julian."

The private study of the Castellan mansion was paneled in dark mahogany and lined with leather-bound ledgers that recorded millions of dollars in maritime trade, real estate acquisitions, and quiet, violent debts collected across the eastern seaboard. Standing before the massive oak desk was Victor Vance, Julian’s consigliere, lawyer, and oldest friend. Victor looked as though he had swallowed a glass of crushed glass. "You just threw out one of the most famous women in the country, a face that sells half the fashion magazines in Europe, to hire... a clumsily dressed, out-of-work office manager who flooded your foyer with Maxwell House?"

Julian sat behind the desk, his elbows resting on the wood, his steeple-fingered hands pressed against his lips. His dark gaze was fixed on the rain lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the grey Atlantic.

"She made him smile, Victor," Julian said quietly. His voice carried a finality that brooked no debate.

"A fluke! The boy was probably having a muscle spasm," Victor argued, pacing across the Persian rug. "Think about the optics, Julian. The media is already circling like vultures since your wife’s accident. If they find out you've installed a middle-class, ordinary woman with zero pedigree as a live-in nanny for the sole heir to the Castellan shipping empire, they'll tear her apart. And worse—your enemies will see it as a vulnerability."

Julian lowered his hands. His eyes flashed with a cold, terrifying intensity that made Victor instinctively step back. "Let them look. Let them try to find a vulnerability. They will find a fortress."

Julian remembered the exact moment Leo had smiled. For two years, Julian had paid world-class specialists, flown in pediatric neurologists from Zurich, and spent millions trying to pierce the wall of trauma surrounding his son's heart. Nothing had worked. Therapists had diagnosed selective mutism, severe post-traumatic shock, and deep emotional withdrawal.

Yet, within five minutes of walking through the door, a woman who couldn't even walk across a polished floor without tripping had bypassed every defense system Julian had spent a fortune building. She hadn't used psychology, money, or intimidation. She had used genuine warmth.

"Where is she now?" Julian asked, his tone shifting back to cold business.

"In the east wing guest suite," Victor sighed, rubbing his temples. "Mrs. Higgins gave her a clean outfit, and she's currently sitting on the floor with Leo, building a fortress out of cardboard boxes. The boy hasn't put down her hand for forty minutes."

Julian stood up, smoothing his charcoal suit jacket. "Double the perimeter security. I want round-the-clock watch on the east wing. No one enters or leaves without my direct authorization. If Delphine tries to call or return, have her removed from the property permanently."

"Understood," Victor muttered. "And Miss Calloway? What are the terms of her employment?"

"Permanent," Julian said simply, walking toward the heavy oak door. "Draft an ironclad contract. Full room and board, complete medical coverage for her family, and a salary that makes it impossible for her to ever leave."
