Chapter 9 - The Trap at the Docks

The old North Shore shipping warehouse smelled of salt, rusted iron, and rotting seaweed. Fog rolled in thick off the Atlantic, swallowing the jagged coastline in a blanket of grey gloom.
Inside the cavernous, abandoned warehouse, a single overhead lightbulb swung gently back and forth over a wooden chair.
Wren sat bound to the chair with heavy ropes, her hands tied behind her back, looking pale and frightened.
From the shadows near the corrugated metal doors, Marco Moretti stepped out, accompanied by four heavily armed thugs. He grinned like a shark smelling blood in the water.
"Well, well, well," Moretti purred, circling Wren like a vulture. "The great Julian Castellan’s little pet. Who would have thought the untouchable mafia king would fall for a clumsy nobody?"
Wren kept her breathing steady, playing her part to perfection. "Julian will never let you get away with this."
"Julian is currently walking into a graveyard," Moretti laughed darkly, raising his radio. "My men have rigged the access roads to his estate. By midnight—"
Clack.
The heavy metal doors of the warehouse suddenly slammed shut with a deafening crash, echoing off the concrete floors.
Moretti froze, spinning around. "What the hell was that?"
From the shadows above the gantry walkways, a single, cold voice cut through the damp air like a razor blade.
"It was the sound of your execution, Moretti."
Julian Castellan stepped out onto the metal walkway above, holding a customized assault rifle, his dark coat billowing behind him like the wings of an angel of death. Behind him, dozens of elite syndicate enforcers materialized from the fog and shadows, laser sights painting a hundred red dots across Moretti’s men.
"Kill her!" Moretti shrieked, panicking, raising his pistol toward Wren.
Before Moretti’s finger could pull the trigger, a deafening roar echoed through the warehouse.
Bang!
Julian’s bullet struck Moretti’s gun hand, blowing the weapon out of his grip in a shower of sparks and blood. Moretti screamed, clutching his shattered hand as he collapsed to his knees.
In less than ten seconds, Moretti’s thugs dropped their weapons, surrounded by overwhelming firepower with nowhere to run.
Julian didn't use the stairs. He vaulted over the ten-foot railing, dropping onto the concrete floor with lethal grace, and strode straight toward Moretti. He grabbed the rival boss by the collar of his suit, hauling him up to eye level, his face a mask of cold, terrifying wrath.
"You touched what is mine," Julian whispered, his voice dangerously low.
"Spare me... Julian... please..." Moretti choked out.
"Take him away," Julian ordered his enforcers without breaking eye contact. "Lock him in the deepest holding cell in Boston. Let him rot until he forgets what the sun looks like."
As Moretti was dragged screaming into the darkness, Julian dropped his weapon, turned around, and rushed over to Wren.
With trembling hands, he whipped out a pocketknife and sliced through the ropes binding her wrists. The moment she was free, Wren didn't hold back—she threw her arms around Julian’s neck, burying her face in his shoulder, sobbing with the delayed shock of the ordeal.

Julian wrapped his arms around her with bone-crushing intensity, burying his face in her hair, breathing in her scent as if he had just been pulled from a drowning sea.
"I've got you," Julian whispered fiercely against her ear, his voice thick with emotion. "I've got you, Wren. It's over. It's all over."
