Chapter 3 - The Cracked Ice

The water swallowed by the four-year-old was no more than a spoonful, but to the man watching behind the glass, it was as if the sun had risen after a four-day eclipse.

Gabriel burst through the bedroom door, unable to contain himself.

The moment the heavy door swung open, Lily dropped the paper cup, gasped in terror, and scrambled behind Claire, hiding her tiny face against the back of Claire's cotton shirt, her small hands clutching Claire's waist with desperate force.

Gabriel froze mid-step, his dark eyes flashing with a mix of joy and immense self-loathing. He had frightened her again.

"Get back," Claire said sharply, her tone leaving no room for negotiation.

Dr. Price and Helen, who had followed Gabriel into the doorway, gasped at Claire’s disrespect toward the most feared man in the city. But Gabriel didn't order his guards to throw her out. Slowly, deliberately, he took three steps backward, lifting his hands in surrender.

"I’m back," Gabriel whispered, his voice hoarse. "I’m back, baby."

Claire wrapped one protective arm around Lily, feeling the child's violent trembling begin to subside. "She took a sip, Mr. Varrick. But if you keep invading her space like a tactical squad, she will shut down again."

Gabriel swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "Whatever you need. Anything. Doctor, get the nutritionists to prepare warm broths, light liquids—whatever Miss Donnelly requests."

"No," Claire countered immediately. "No heavy broths. Her stomach has been empty for four days; heavy food will make her sick and cause panic. Bring plain room-temperature water, crushed ice, and basic chamomile tea with half a spoonful of honey."

Helen Vance stepped forward, her hands folded neatly. "Miss Donnelly, Dr. Price is a world-renowned specialist. I believe he knows what nourishment a Varrick child requires—"

"Helen," Gabriel’s voice dropped an octave, cutting through the air like a razor blade. "Do as she says. Immediately."

Helen’s jaw tightened, a momentary flash of cold hatred darting across her face before she bowed her head. "Of course, Mr. Varrick."

Over the next six hours, Claire remained on the carpet. She didn't push Lily. She didn't force her to speak. By midnight, Lily had consumed half a cup of water, three spoonfuls of chamomile tea, and had fallen asleep with her head rested directly on Claire’s lap, her tiny fingers tightly looped through the belt loops of Claire’s jeans.

The medical team quietly unhooked the IV line while Lily slept.

Gabriel sat in a leather armchair in the far corner of the bedroom, shadowed by the dim nightlights, watching the two of them. The terrifying crime lord looked completely washed out, his eyes never leaving his sleeping daughter.

"She hasn't slept without night terrors since Tuesday," Gabriel said softly, breaking the hours of quiet.

Claire stroked Lily's dark curls gently. "Children don't process grief through logic, Mr. Varrick. They process it through feeling safety. Right now, she feels like the world is collapsing."

Gabriel looked at Claire, really looking at her for the first time. He saw the faint dark circles under her eyes, her modest clothes, and the quiet dignity she carried.

"Vivian told me about your mother," Gabriel said quietly.

Claire stiffened. "My mother has nothing to do with my work here."

"Eighty-one thousand dollars in medical debt," Gabriel continued, pulling an envelope from his inner jacket pocket and setting it on the coffee table beside him. "There is a check inside for one hundred thousand dollars. It’s yours. Consider it an advance for the first month."

Claire stared at the envelope, her breath catching in her throat. "I haven't earned this yet."

"You saved my daughter's life tonight," Gabriel said, his voice laced with absolute finality. "In my world, we pay our debts immediately. You stay here, Miss Donnelly. Live in the penthouse. Take care of Lily. I will make sure your mother is transferred to the top oncology unit at Sloan Kettering tomorrow morning, fully paid for."

Claire looked at the powerful, dangerous man sitting across from her. She knew who he was; she knew the blood that stained his name. But looking into his eyes, she saw only a desperate father willing to burn the world to protect his child.

"I’ll stay," Claire whispered.
