Chapter 4 - Whispers in the Shadows

By the third day, a fragile rhythm had established itself inside the penthouse.

Lily still refused to speak a single word to anyone, but she followed Claire everywhere like a tiny shadow. When Claire walked into the kitchen, Lily held her hand. When Claire sat on the balcony to read, Lily curled into her lap. She began eating small portions of soft food—toast, applesauce, warm rice—always prepared by Claire’s own hands.

However, as Lily’s physical health stabilized, the subtle poison within the Varrick household began to reveal itself.

It was 2:00 AM. Claire had put Lily to bed and was walking down the long, carpeted corridor toward the kitchen to fetch a glass of water. The penthouse was dimly lit, shadows stretching across the high walls.

As she rounded the corner near Gabriel’s private study, she heard hushed, urgent voices coming from behind a cracked door.

"...he’s losing his edge, Victor," Helen Vance’s sharp whisper echoed softly. "He spent the entire afternoon sitting in his daughter's room watching a twenty-five-dollar-an-hour nanny read fairy tales. The council is getting restless. The docks in New Jersey are already being contested by the Moretti family."

A man’s low voice replied. Claire recognized it instantly—Victor Cruz, Gabriel’s head of security and second-in-command, a man who rarely smiled and carried two concealed weapons under his jacket at all times.

"Gabriel is compromised," Victor said coldly. "The hit on his wife was supposed to clear his head, force him into a full war with Moretti. Instead, it broke him."

Claire’s heart stopped. The hit on his wife was supposed to force him into a war?

"What about the girl?" Helen asked, her voice chillingly casual. "The child was in the car. She saw too much."

"The kid is four years old, Helen. She’s traumatized into silence. But if she starts talking, or if Gabriel finds out the hit was leaked from inside our own office..." Victor paused, his tone turning dark and predatory. "We make sure both the kid and the new nanny disappear before the trial."

Claire squeezed her eyes shut, pressing her back against the cold marble wall, her breathing entirely suspended.

Internal betrayal. The hit on Gabriel’s wife hadn't been an ambush by an outside enemy—it had been facilitated from the inside. And Helen, the polished house manager, along with Victor, the head of security, were the ones pulling the strings.

Suddenly, a floorboard creaked beneath Claire’s foot.

"Who’s there?" Victor’s voice snapped inside the room.

Heavy footsteps instantly rushed toward the door. Panic surged through Claire’s veins like ice water. She couldn't run down the hallway without being seen.

Just as the door handle began to turn, a firm, warm hand grabbed Claire’s wrist from the darkness behind her and yanked her into an adjacent linen closet, pulling the door shut without making a sound.
