Chapter 7 - The Final Betrayal

"What a touching scene," Helen said, her voice smooth, chilling, and devoid of any emotion. She stepped into the room, closing the door softly behind her.
Claire immediately scrambled across the rug, pulling Lily behind her back, shielding the child with her own body.
"Helen," Claire said, forcing her voice to remain steady while her mind searched frantically for an exit. "Gabriel took you and Victor to Red Hook."
Helen chuckled, a low, melodic sound that sent ice through Claire’s veins. "Gabriel thought he was setting a trap for Victor. What he didn't realize was that Victor was merely a distraction. While Gabriel was busy dealing with Victor in Brooklyn, my men ambushed his convoy."
Claire’s heart plummeted into a dark abyss. "Gabriel..."
"Oh, don't worry, he’s not dead yet," Helen said, raising the gun slightly. "Gabriel Varrick is too valuable to kill quickly. The Moretti family wants him alive long enough to sign over the harbor deeds and the offshore trust accounts. Once he signs, he will join his dead wife."
Lily let out a tiny, whimpering cry behind Claire’s back, clutching Claire's shirt tightly.
"And now," Helen continued, taking a step closer, "I have to clean up the remaining loose ends. A talkative four-year-old and her noble little nanny."
"She’s four years old, Helen!" Claire shouted, her eyes blazing with fury. "She’s a baby! How can you do this?"
"In this world, Miss Donnelly, weakness is a disease," Helen replied coldly, thumbing the safety off the silenced weapon. "And Gabriel’s love for his family was his ultimate weakness."
Claire’s hand secretly slid behind her back, touching the heavy, solid oak building block Lily had been playing with moments earlier.
"You made one mistake, Helen," Claire said, her voice dropping into a dangerous calm.
Helen paused, an eyebrow raised. "Oh? And what was that?"

"You underestimated a mother who has nothing left to lose."
With a sudden, explosive motion, Claire lunged forward, swinging the heavy oak block with all her strength directly at Helen’s face!
