Chapter 2 - The Bloodline's Secret

Plaster dust and wood shrapnel rained down on the small living room.

Sophia screamed, dropping to her knees behind the kitchen island and shielding Emma with her body. Emma didn't cry; her small hands were clutched tightly around the back of her mother’s sweater, her eyes wide as she watched Bruno.

The black dog didn't retreat.

As the shattered remains of the door were kicked inward, a shadowy figure clad in tactical gear lunged into the apartment, an automatic submachine gun raised.

Before the shooter could clear the doorway, Bruno launched his 140-pound frame forward.

It wasn't the graceful, explosive jump of a young attack dog. It was a brutal, desperate assault powered by sheer will. Bruno’s jaws closed around the man’s throat guard, the crushing force of his grip severing tactical straps and flesh alike. The assailant went down with a heavy crash, his weapon firing a useless burst into the ceiling before dropping to the floor.

Alessandro stepped over the writhing operative, delivering a single, precise shot to the man's chest.

He grabbed Marco Bellini by his tactical vest, dragging his security chief into the apartment and slamming him against the wall.

"Alessandro!" Marco gasped, blood dripping from a grazed cheekbone. "It’s an ambush! It’s not just the perimeter—it’s the inner circle! Half the night guards stopped responding on the comms three minutes ago!"

"Who authorized the dark window on the security feeds?!" Alessandro growled, his eyes burning with lethal intent.

"It came from the main terminal!" Marco choked out. "Only three people have those override codes! You, me... and Victor!"

Alessandro’s mind raced. Victor Vance was his second-in-command—a man who had stood beside him during the bloody syndicate wars sixteen years ago. Victor was the man who had brought Bruno to Alessandro as a pup, a gift following the tragic fire that had claimed the lives of Alessandro’s older brother and sister-in-law.

Bruno walked slowly back to Sophia and Emma. He didn't look at the dead operative on the floor. He stepped over the debris, placed his bloody muzzle onto Emma’s small knee, and let out a long, shuddering sigh.

Emma reached out with a trembling hand, gently wiping a streak of red soot from the dog's nose. "Ouchie gone?" she whispered softly.

Alessandro stared at the dog. A sudden, terrible realization began to take root in his mind.

"Marco," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm whisper. "Where was Victor sixteen years ago on the night of the Lake Villa fire?"

Marco blinked, confused by the sudden change in topic amidst the gunfire echoing across the distant courtyard. "Victor? He... he was the one who pulled you out of the burning house, Boss. He found you in the study. He said your brother's family was already dead when he arrived."

"And the dog?" Alessandro asked, pointing a trembling finger at Bruno. "Where did Victor say he found the dog?"

"He said... he said the dog was a stray from the neighborhood," Marco stammered. "A pup running from the flames."

Alessandro looked down at Emma.

The child’s dark brown eyes, the subtle curve of her jawline, the distinct shape of her collarbone... features he had ignored for six months because Sophia Carter was simply a widowed accountant he had hired to clean up his estate's legitimate balance sheets.

"Sophia," Alessandro said, turning to the terrified woman. "Who was your husband?"

Sophia swallowed hard, hugging Emma tighter. "His name was Julian. Julian Vance."

Alessandro felt the world tilt beneath his feet.

"Julian Vance was Victor’s estranged son," Sophia sobbed, her voice breaking beneath the sound of approaching footsteps in the hallway. "Julian ran away from the Moretti syndicate twenty years ago! He changed his name! Before he died in that car crash three years ago, he told me never to go near Chicago... but I had no money, Alessandro! I needed a job to feed Emma! I didn't know your estate was connected to Victor!"

Alessandro’s gaze snapped back to Bruno.

The dog hadn't chosen a random three-year-old girl.

Bruno hadn't betrayed sixteen years of loyalty to Alessandro.

Bruno had recognized the bloodline.

Sixteen years ago, Bruno hadn't been a stray. He had been the family guard dog of Alessandro's late brother—the dog that had tried to protect Alessandro's infant niece before the fire consumed the villa. And now, sitting on the ruined floor of a servant's apartment, the ancient beast was looking at the last surviving descendant of his original masters.

"He didn't choose her over me," Alessandro whispered, a profound, shattering grief tearing through his chest. "He was protecting her family from us."
