Chapter 8 - The Vault on Michigan Avenue

The Federal Reserve building’s private vault facility was a subterranean labyrinth of reinforced steel, electronic security grids, and bulletproof glass.

Victor Vance stood inside the master control office, sweating profusely, his fingers flying across a laptop keyboard connected directly to the Swiss banking network.

"Come on... come on... authorization code complete..." Victor muttered frantically to himself.

Behind him, through the thick, floor-to-ceiling glass wall facing the outer atrium, six of his remaining elite mercenaries stood guard with military-grade rifles.

"Mr. Vance!" one of the guards yelled through the intercom. "We have heavy vehicles approaching the street level! The police aren't responding to our silent alarms! Someone is jamming the entire district's communications!"

Victor’s heart hammered against his ribs. "Hold the main elevators! The transfer takes four more minutes!"

Suddenly, the heavy steel blast doors at the end of the atrium didn't open.

They exploded.

A massive, armored breaching vehicle smashed straight through the six-inch reinforced steel frame, raining concrete and metal shrapnel across the marble floor.

Before the mercenaries could open fire, a barrage of flashbang grenades bounced into the atrium, exploding in a blinding display of white light and deafening sound.

Through the smoke, a terrifying force swept into the vault facility.

It wasn't a tactical police unit. It was the unified army of the Moretti syndicate—fifty veteran soldiers led by Alessandro Moretti and Lorenzo Falcone.

The firefight was short, brutal, and absolute. Within ninety seconds, Victor’s mercenaries were disarmed, wounded, or neutralized, their weapons clattering across the slick floor.

Victor backed away from his laptop, terror seizing his throat as he grabbed his silver revolver from the desk. "Stay back! The glass is bulletproof! You can't get in here!"

Alessandro stepped through the smoke, stopping three feet from the reinforced glass wall separating him from Victor.

Beside Alessandro stood Bruno.

The black dog’s dark coat was brushed, his posture broad and terrifying. He stared through the glass directly into Victor Vance’s eyes.

"The glass is three-inch ballistic polycarbonate, Victor," Alessandro said calmly through the wall's intercom system. "You're right. Bullets won't shatter it."

Victor let out a hysterical, manic laugh. "Then you lose, Alessandro! The transfer is ninety percent complete! In three minutes, I am a billionaire with diplomatic immunity in South America! You can't touch me!"

Alessandro pulled a small digital remote control from his coat pocket.

"Did you really think I didn't know who built the security overrides for this vault ten years ago?" Alessandro asked softly. "My brother designed it, Victor. And he left the master mechanical override code with his most trusted asset."

Alessandro didn't enter a code into a keypad.

He reached down, taking the small leather collar from Bruno’s neck—the ancient, weathered collar the dog had worn for sixteen years.

Alessandro unscrewed a small, hollow silver cylinder attached near the collar's brass buckle. Inside was a tiny, vintage mechanical key.

"Anthony hid the master emergency key on Bruno's collar the night you set the fire," Alessandro revealed, his voice shaking with intense emotion. "For sixteen years, you looked at this dog every single day, Victor. You walked past him in my courtyard. And the key to your absolute destruction was hanging inches from your hands."

Victor’s face went completely slack. His eyes bulged with pure, unadulterated horror as he looked at the tiny silver key in Alessandro's fingers.

"No..." Victor screamed, rushing toward the glass wall. "No! That's impossible! Anthony didn't know!"

Alessandro stepped up to the master manual keyhole beside the heavy vault door. He inserted the silver key, turning it clockwise until a deep, heavy CLACK-CLACK-CLACK of mechanical gears resonated through the floor.

The three-inch ballistic glass wall slid open.

The air inside the vault dropped to freezing.

Victor stumbled backward, tripping over his desk chair, dropping his silver revolver onto the floor. He scrambled on his hands and knees until his back hit the cold steel of the master safe.

Alessandro walked into the room, stepping over the scattered papers.

Behind him, Bruno stepped through the open doorway.

The dog didn't run. He didn't bark. He walked with a slow, heavy, majestic pace, stopping directly in front of the man who had ordered the murder of his original family.

"Please..." Victor choked out, tears of terror spilling over his wrinkled cheeks, clutching his hands together in a desperate plea. "Alessandro... please! I raised you! I made you the boss! I was like a father to you!"

"My father was an honorable man," Alessandro said, looking down at the coward on the floor. "My brother was a good man. You are nothing."

Alessandro didn't raise his weapon. He looked down at Bruno.

"Bruno," Alessandro murmured softly. "Is he worth it?"

Bruno looked at Victor.

The dog let out a quiet, dismissive exhale through his snout. He turned his massive head away from Victor Vance, ignoring him completely, and walked back out of the vault toward the atrium.

Alessandro smiled—a cold, beautiful expression of absolute victory.

"He doesn't even think you're worth biting, Victor," Alessandro said softly.

Alessandro gestured to Marco and two Loyalist soldiers standing at the door.

"Lock him in the vault," Alessandro commanded. "Hand him over to the federal authorities along with the complete paper trail of his financial crimes. Let him spend the rest of his miserable life in a maximum-security cell, watching Emma grow up from a television screen."

"NO! NO! ALESSANDRO! KILL ME! JUST KILL ME!" Victor shrieked as the heavy steel vault doors began to slide shut, sealing him inside the dark, soundproof room forever.
