Chapter 10 - Before Midnight and Forever

Six months later.

The bells of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City rang out across Manhattan, their joyful chime filling the clear spring air.

Inside the grand cathedral, towering stained-glass windows cast brilliant rays of sapphire, rose, and gold light across thousands of white roses lining the central aisle. The air was filled with the divine harmonies of a forty-piece orchestra playing classical symphonies.

Standing at the altar in a sharply tailored black tuxedo was Damian Moretti. At forty-two, he had never looked more handsome, commanding, or deeply at peace. Beside him stood Marcus as his best man, along with his inner circle of trusted lieutenants.

The music shifted into a majestic bridal march.

The grand wooden doors at the rear of the cathedral swung open.

A breath of absolute awe rippled through the hundreds of gathered guests.

Clara Hayes stepped into the light.

She was stunning beyond words. Her custom-designed ivory lace wedding gown clung perfectly to her lush, curvy figure, trailing down into a magnificent six-foot train embroidered with delicate rose and oak leaf patterns. A long sheer veil framed her glowing face, where dark curls fell softly over her shoulders. In her hands, she held a bouquet of white peonies and dark green olive branches.

Walking beside her, beaming with pride, was Aunt Rosa, who had insisted on walking Clara down the aisle herself.

As Clara began her slow walk toward the altar, her dark eyes locked onto Damian. Every step she took felt like a victory over the darkness of her past. She wasn't walking as a victim of humiliation, nor as a timid housekeeper hiding in the shadows. She was walking as a woman of power, dignity, and boundless love.

Damian’s breath caught in his throat. Tears of pure joy welled in his dark eyes as he watched his bride approach. The powerful man who had commanded empires and intimidated cartels felt his knees grow weak with overwhelming love.

When Clara reached the altar, Aunt Rosa placed Clara’s hand into Damian’s large, warm palm.

"Take care of her, Damian," Rosa whispered with a misty smile.

"With my life, Aunt Rosa," Damian promised softly.

Damian brought Clara’s hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles gently before turning to face the cardinal standing before them.

The wedding ceremony was a breathtaking testament to their journey. Vows were exchanged not with superficial poetry, but with raw, unshakeable truth.

When it came time for Damian to speak his vows, he looked directly into Clara’s dark, shining eyes, his voice echoing clearly through the sacred cathedral.

"Clara," Damian spoke, his voice filled with profound warmth. "Six months ago, you stood in a room full of enemies and guarded the truth with your very life. You taught me that true power isn't found in wealth or fear, but in courage, integrity, and love. I promise to honor you, protect you, and cherish you through every storm and every victory. My empire is yours. My heart is yours. My life is yours forever."

Clara smiled through her happy tears, her voice steady and ringing with deep conviction.

"Damian," Clara spoke, holding his hands tightly. "You saw me when the world tried to make me invisible. You offered me a sanctuary, but more than that, you offered me an equal place by your side. I promise to love you, stand with you in battle, and bring warmth to your life for as long as we both shall live. You are my home, my protector, and my true love."

The cardinal smiled warmly, lifting his hands over the couple. "By the authority vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. What God has joined together, let no man put asunder. You may kiss the bride."

Damian didn't wait a single second. He stepped forward, taking Clara into his arms and pulling her close against his heart. He lifted her veil gently and brought his lips down onto hers in a deep, passionate, and triumphant kiss that brought the entire cathedral to its feet in a thunderous ovation.

Cheers and applause echoed off the vaulted stone ceilings as Damian broke the kiss, sweeping Clara up into his arms and carrying her down the flower-covered aisle as husband and wife.

Later that evening, the wedding reception was held at the magnificent hilltop estate in Connecticut. The grand gallery—where the memory card had once changed the course of destiny—was filled with golden light, live music, and joyous laughter.

As midnight approached, Damian led Clara out onto the private balcony overlooking the vast, dark gardens. The spring breeze blew softly, carrying the sweet scent of blooming lilacs.

Clara leaned back against Damian’s broad chest, his arms wrapped securely around her waist, resting her hands over his. The six-carat blue diamond on her ring finger sparkled under the light of the full moon.

"Look at the clock, my love," Damian whispered gently into her ear, pointing toward the grand grandfather clock standing in the gallery hallway.

The hands of the clock were moving toward twelve.

"Six months ago, before midnight, our story almost ended in humiliation and ruin," Clara murmured softly, relaxing back into his powerful embrace.

"And tonight, before midnight," Damian replied softly, turning her around in his arms so he could look into her beautiful eyes, "our forever begins."

Damian leaned down, pressing his lips to hers as the distant clock struck twelve, chiming out the arrival of a new day, a new life, and a love that had proven unbreakable.

They stood together under the starlit sky—the Mafia Boss and his Curvy Queen—bound forever in a love story that no paint, no conspiracy, and no enemy could ever destroy.
