Chapter 4 - Ambush at the Penthouse

"Stay behind me!" Damian commanded, his gentle tone instantly evaporating into pure military authority. He pulled a sleek black sidearm from a concealed holster beneath his armpit, racking the slide with practiced ease.
The main elevator chime sounded, followed immediately by the dull thud of heavy footsteps and the sharp chatter of suppressed automatic gunfire coming from the foyer.
Marcus’s voice crackled through Damian’s earpiece. "Boss! We’ve got a breach on the private elevator! Falcone’s mercenaries bypassed the lower garage security using an override key card! They’re inside the foyer!"
"How many?" Damian demanded, grabbing Clara by the wrist and pulling her back into the deeper recesses of the library, behind the heavy mahogany desk.
"At least eight heavily armed men!" Marcus shouted over the sound of breaking glass and gunfire. "We’re holding the main hall, but they came to kill!"
Clara’s heart hammered violently in her chest, but she refused to panic. She looked around the library, her mind working furiously. The room had two entrances—the main double doors leading to the corridor, and a small service door behind the bookshelf that led to the estate’s maintenance ductwork.
"Damian," Clara whispered, pulling on his arm. "The service door behind the Renaissance collection! It leads to the ventilation shaft that connects to the private fire escape!"
Damian looked at her, impressed once again by her knowledge of the building’s layout. "How do you know that?"
"I cleaned the duct grates last month," she replied quickly. "The security blueprints are posted in the maintenance room!"
Before Damian could respond, the double doors of the library blew inward with a violent blast. Splinters of wood and clouding drywall dust filled the air.
Two men clad in tactical black gear and wearing night-vision goggles strode through the smoke, their weapons raised.
Damian didn't hesitate. He leaned out from behind the mahogany desk and fired three precise shots. The first mercenary collapsed immediately; the second ducked behind a marble column, returning fire and shattering a row of antique leather-bound books above Clara’s head.
"Go to the service door now!" Damian barked, firing another suppression round to keep the shooter pinned behind the column.
Clara scrambled toward the hidden wall panel behind the bookshelf, her hands flying over the carved wood until she felt the subtle release latch. The hidden door popped open with a quiet click, revealing a dark, narrow corridor lined with exposed piping.
"It's open!" she called out.
Damian backed away from the desk, keeping his weapon trained on the doorway. Suddenly, another mercenary charged through the smoke, tackling Damian around the waist. Both men slammed into the hardwood floor, rolling across the Persian rug.
"Damian!" Clara screamed.
The mercenary, a massive man with a scarred face, managed to knock Damian’s gun from his hand. The weapon slid across the floor, stopping near Clara’s feet. The attacker pulled a heavy combat knife from his tactical vest, plunging it down toward Damian’s chest.
Damian caught the man’s wrist with both hands, straining against the mercenary's overwhelming downward force. The blade hovered inches from Damian’s throat.
Clara didn't think. Instinct took over. She scooped up the heavy handgun from the floor, holding it with both hands just as her father had taught her when she was young. She aimed at the mercenary’s exposed shoulder and pulled the trigger.
The loud roar of the gun echoed through the room. The bullet struck the attacker in the shoulder, throwing him off balance.
Damian seized the moment. He swung his leg around, sweeping the mercenary off him, and delivered a devastating punch to the man's jaw, knocking him unconscious instantly.
Damian scrambled to his feet, grabbed his gun from Clara, and looked at her with sheer disbelief and profound admiration.
"You shot him," Damian said, his breath coming in heavy ragged gasps.
"I saved your life," Clara corrected, her hands shaking slightly as the adrenaline surged through her veins. "Now let's get out of here before more show up!"
Damian grabbed her hand, squeezing it tightly, and pulled her into the narrow service corridor. He slammed the hidden door shut behind them, locking the mechanical bolt from the inside.
They moved quickly down the dimly lit maintenance passage, the sounds of distant gunfire fading behind them. Damian led her down a steel spiral staircase that bypassed the compromised main elevator and exited directly into a secure ground-floor alleyway behind the building.
A discreet black sedan was already idling in the alley, driven by one of Damian’s senior lieutenants, a grizzled man named Frank.
"Boss! Get in!" Frank yelled, throwing open the rear door.
Damian ushered Clara into the backseat, sliding in beside her as Frank slammed his foot on the accelerator. The sedan screeched out of the alley just as two rival SUVs sped down the main street, their headlights sweeping across the dark pavement.
Clara slumped back against the leather seat, gasping for air, her heart pounding like a drum. She looked down at her hands—they were trembling uncontrollably now that the immediate danger had passed.
Damian wrapped a warm, powerful arm around her shoulders, pulling her gently against his broad chest. Clara didn't resist. She buried her face into the crook of his neck, breathing in the scent of cedar wood, expensive cologne, and gunpowder.
"You're safe now, Clara," Damian murmured softly, his lips brushing against her hair. "I've got you."
"They tried to kill us," she whispered against his skin.
May you like
"They failed," Damian declared, his voice cold with absolute resolve. "Julian Falcone just made the biggest mistake of his life. He brought war to my doorstep. Now, I am going to end him."
As the sedan sped away into the darkness of the highway, heading north toward an undisclosed safehouse, Clara felt the safe, possessive grip of Damian’s arms around her. She knew the fight was far from over, but for the first time in her life, she felt entirely protected by a man who was willing to burn the world down to keep her safe.
