Chapter 7 - The Docks of Brooklyn

The rain had returned to New York City, falling in heavy, continuous sheets over the industrial graveyard of the Brooklyn waterfront. Fog hung low over the Hudson River, obscuring the outlines of rusted cranes and decaying shipping containers.

Damian Moretti stood in the shadow of a stack of steel cargo containers two hundred yards from Warehouse 14. He wore a dark tactical trench coat over a bulletproof vest, a high-powered automatic rifle slung across his shoulder. Beside him, Marcus and eight elite operators monitored the perimeter using night-vision scopes.

"Thermal imaging shows twelve bodies inside the main floor," Marcus reported in a low whisper. "Julian Falcone's primary vehicle is parked at the rear loading dock. The transaction with the foreign buyers is scheduled to start in ten minutes."

Damian checked his watch. "Signal the perimeter teams. We breach the central loading bay doors simultaneously from the north and west entrances. Neutralize Falcone’s guards, secure the buyers, and capture Falcone alive. I want him to sign over his family's maritime deeds before he spends the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary."

"Understood, boss," Marcus said, raising his hand to signal the assault team.

Suddenly, Damian’s tactical headset buzzed with violent static. A high-pitched tone cut through the radio frequency, followed by a faint, cracking voice breaking through the signal jammer.

"...Damian! Damian, do you read me?!"

Damian’s eyes narrowed. He recognized that voice instantly.

"Clara?" Damian spoke into his throat mic, his brow furrowing in alarm. "Clara, why are you on this frequency? You should be at Lake Placid!"

"Damian, listen to me!" Clara’s voice came through the static, clear and frantic. "Do not enter through the central loading bay floor! The warehouse floor joists are untreated 1920s creosote timber! Falcone has placed demolition charges on the support columns in the sub-basement! The moment your team breaches the central floor, he intends to detonate the charges and drop the entire structure into the harbor basin!"

Damian froze. He looked down at the concrete floor of the loading bay entrance, then at the age of the exterior brickwork. Clara’s knowledge of historical construction hit him like a physical blow.

"Marcus! Hold!" Damian barked sharply, grabbing his lieutenant’s shoulder and pulling him back into the shadow of the container. "Abort the central breach! Abort immediately!"

The assault team halted instantly, dropping into defensive positions.

"Boss, what's wrong?" Marcus asked, bewildered.

"The floor is a kill-box," Damian revealed, his voice laced with cold fury. "Falcone rigged the sub-basement with explosives. He isn't holding a meeting; he's waiting for us to step onto that floor so he can detonate it from a safe distance."

Through his throat mic, Damian spoke back to Clara. "Clara, how did you get this signal through?"

"We drove to the Lake Placid microwave tower," Clara replied, her voice trembling slightly with relief. "Frank bypassed the regional drenching frequency. Damian... please be careful."

A warm, profound surge of emotion welled up in Damian’s chest. Once again, this remarkable woman had seen what everyone else missed, saving his life and the lives of his men from a distance of three hundred miles.

"You are extraordinary, Clara," Damian said softly into the mic. "Now stay on the line and watch what I do to the men who tried to trap us."

Damian turned to Marcus, his expression shifting into that of a merciless commander. "Change of plan. We don't breach the floor. Target the sub-basement drainage culverts from the river side. We blow the support columns before Falcone expects us, and we drop the rear office where he's hiding."

"Copy that, boss!" Marcus grinned darkly.

Two operators moved silently to the edge of the pier, launching a pair of heavy wire-guided breaching charges into the lower water grates beneath the warehouse.

Damian counted down from three. "Detonate."

A deafening explosion rocked the waterfront. A column of fire and pulverized mortar erupted from the rear foundation of Warehouse 14. The entire back section of the old building groaned violently as the rotten timber joists buckled under the blast.

Screams rang out from inside the building as the rear office structure collapsed inward, dropping straight into three feet of mud and river water.

"Move in!" Damian ordered, leading his men through the smoke.

They stormed the outer perimeter, overpowering Falcone’s disoriented guards within seconds. Damian swept through the shattered rear framework, his gun raised, stepping over twisting metal and wooden debris until he reached the ruins of the main office.

Julian Falcone was crawling out from beneath a fallen oak beam, his face covered in soot and blood, clutching a fractured collarbone. His foreign buyers were pinned under plaster panels, groaning in pain.

Damian walked up to Julian, standing over him like an avenging deity. He placed the heavy boot of his leather shoe firmly on Julian’s chest, pressing him down into the damp soil.

Julian gasped for air, looking up into Damian’s cold, dark eyes with absolute horror. "Moretti... how... how did you know?"

"You underestimated the women in my life, Julian," Damian said softly, raising his sidearm and aiming it directly between Falcone's eyes. "Vanessa was a weak link. But Clara... Clara is my partner."

"Please... don't..." Falcone whimpered, his arrogance completely shattered.

"I won't kill you, Julian," Damian said, clicking the safety back onto his pistol. "Death is too easy. Federal agents and the District Attorney are already raiding your father’s estate in Boston as we speak. You are going to prison for corporate treason, attempted murder, and racketeering."

Marcus stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Falcone’s wrists and dragging him out of the rubble.

Damian walked out of the smoking ruins of Warehouse 14, stepping out onto the open pier. He pulled off his tactical helmet, letting the cold rain wash the ash from his face.

He lifted his hand to his throat mic. "Clara?"

"I'm here, Damian," her voice came back instantly, filled with trembling hope. "Are you alright?"

May you like

Damian looked out across the dark waters of the Hudson, a deep, victorious smile breaking across his handsome features.

"The war is over, Clara," Damian declared softly. "I'm coming home to you."
