Chapter 4 - The Web of Betrayal

Dominic’s eyes turned to cold blue ice.
"Tell Marco to hold the line at the main gate," Dominic commanded into the phone. "Do not shoot officers, but do not let them cross the inner threshold. I am handling Vance myself."
He hung up the phone and looked at Fiona.
"It seems my father-in-law is moving faster than expected," Dominic said, his jaw locked. "He knows that if Dr. Reed talks, the Senator's own involvement in funding the illegal medical trials that created this poison will be exposed."
Fiona gasped. "Senator Vance was involved in this?"
"Vance is heavily invested in a rogue pharmaceutical firm operating out of Indiana," Dominic explained coldly. "They were using untested neurological toxins to develop military-grade incapacitating agents. Reed was their lead researcher. Victoria was their way into my home."
"They weren't just trying to kill Arthur to get your inheritance," Fiona realized, her mind racing. "They were using your son as a live test subject for an unapproved drug!"
The sheer evil of it sent a shudder down Fiona’s spine. To poison a seven-year-old child not just for greed, but as a human guinea pig for a political syndicate, was a level of depravity she couldn't fathom.
"I have to go back to the city," Dominic said, stepping toward the stairs. "I need to silence Vance before he uses his political leverage to seize my assets and take Arthur into state custody."
"You can't leave Arthur here alone!" Fiona said, following him down the stairs.
"He isn't alone. He has my two best men outside, and he has you," Dominic said, turning at the bottom of the stairs to face her. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently gripping her shoulder. The contrast between his lethal reputation and the gentle pressure of his touch was striking. "I trust you with his life, Fiona. I don't trust anyone else in this world."
Fiona felt a sudden flutter in her chest, a warm heat rising up her neck. She looked into his piercing blue eyes and saw not a ruthless mobster, but a desperate father willing to burn the world down to keep his child safe.
"Go," Fiona said softly. "I'll keep him safe. But promise me you'll come back alive."
Dominic's lips twitched into a genuine, faint smile. "It takes more than a corrupt senator and a few dirty cops to kill me, Miss Jenkins."
He turned and strode out the front door into the storm, leaving Fiona in the quiet safehouse.
Fiona didn't waste a second. She set up a temporary lab station on the kitchen counter using the portable blood testing kit she had brought in her trauma bag. She placed a drop of Arthur’s blood onto a test strip, inserting it into her digital analyzer.
While the machine whirred and processed the sample, she pulled out her personal laptop and logged into Northwestern Memorial's secure database using her emergency credentials. She began cross-referencing the chemical markers from the analyzer with known experimental pharmacological patents linked to Senator Vance's medical foundation.
Ten minutes later, the screen flashed red.
MATCH FOUND: Compound X-94 (Neuro-degenerative Toxin) Developer: Apex Bio-Tech (Subsidiary of Vance Holdings) Antidote: Atropine-Pralidoxime Complex (Specific Batch #882-B)
Fiona leaned back, her breath catching in her throat. She had found it. The exact antidote existed, but it wasn't a standard hospital drug—it was stored exclusively in Apex Bio-Tech's high-security research facility in downtown Chicago.
Suddenly, the lights in the safehouse flickered and died, plunging the room into pitch blackness.
Fiona froze.
Outside, the heavy rain continued to fall, but beneath the sound of the storm, she heard two distinct, muffled thuds on the front lawn.
Silencers.

Fiona instantly grabbed her penlight, slammed her laptop shut, and crept silently toward the window. Looking through the blinds, she saw two dark figures dressed in tactical gear standing over the lifeless bodies of Dominic's two private guards.
Someone had tracked them to the safehouse.
