Chapter 7 - The Assault on Michigan Avenue

The Apex Bio-Tech building was a forty-story glass tower sitting prominently on North Michigan Avenue. Normally, it was a gleaming symbol of modern corporate medicine. Tonight, it was a fortress under siege.

When Marco's armored truck screeched to a halt in front of the glass plaza, the lobby was already chaotic. Alarm bells rang loudly, red emergency lights flashed across the marble walls, and private security guards were throwing down their weapons as Dominic's suited enforcers secured the main entrance.

Dominic stood in the center of the lobby like a warlord commanding his army. His trench coat was thrown over his shoulder, his white shirt stained with dirt and rain, a heavy black pistol resting in his grip.

When he saw Marco's truck arrive, he dropped the weapon into his holster and sprinted across the polished floor toward the vehicle.

The doors opened, and Fiona stepped out, carrying Arthur in her arms.

Dominic didn't hesitate. He wrapped his massive arms around both of them, pulling his son and Fiona into a tight, desperate embrace.

"You're safe," Dominic breathed, his voice hoarse with emotion as he kissed Arthur’s head repeatedly. "You're safe, my boy."

Arthur wrapped his arms around his father's neck, sobbing softly. "Daddy, Fiona saved me from the fire!"

Dominic looked over Arthur’s shoulder, his icy blue eyes meeting Fiona’s. The look in his eyes was no longer that of a mob boss—it was a look of profound, overwhelming gratitude, reverence, and an emotion so deep it made Fiona’s breath catch in her throat.

"I owe you my life, Fiona," Dominic whispered. "My son's life, and mine."

"We're not done yet," Fiona said, keeping her composure. "Where is the antidote?"

Dominic's face hardened as he pulled back. "The clean-up crew activated the thermite charges on the 32nd floor where the bio-vaults are kept. The automated fire doors have locked down the entire floor. My men can't break through the vault door—it’s reinforced titanium with an electronic bio-lock."

"I can open it," Fiona said instantly.

Dominic stared at her. "What?"

"I registered with the state medical board for bio-hazard emergency response during the pandemic," Fiona explained rapidly. "Every trauma nurse in Illinois has a master medical override code embedded in their digital ID badge for emergency containment vaults! If the vault is running on standard medical protocol, my credential card can bypass the lockdown!"

Dominic didn't waste another word. He reached down, grasped Fiona’s hand firmly in his own, and looked at Marco.

"Cover us," Dominic ordered. "We go to the 32nd floor."

They rushed into the heavy freight elevator—Dominic, Fiona carrying Arthur, Marco, and three armed bodyguards. The elevator doors closed, and the lift surged upward through the burning building.

As the floors ticked up—20... 25... 30—the smell of smoke began seeping through the elevator shaft. The air grew hot, and the hum of emergency sirens outside grew faint.

The elevator doors opened on the 32nd floor into a nightmare.

Thick grey smoke filled the hallway. The carpet was scorched, and sparks rained down from exposed ceiling wires. At the end of the long corridor stood a massive round vault door, glowing red around the edges as internal fires consumed the lab behind it.

Two mercenaries clad in black fire-resistant suits turned toward the elevator, raising their automatic rifles.

Before they could pull their triggers, Dominic stepped in front of Fiona and Arthur, drawing his weapon with terrifying speed.

Crack! Crack!

Both mercenaries fell to the floor instantly. Dominic didn't even pause. He grabbed Fiona’s arm, guiding her through the smoke toward the heavy vault door.

"The keypad!" Fiona shouted over the roar of the alarms, pulling her medical credential badge from her neck lanyard.

The digital screen on the vault read: CRITICAL BIO-HAZARD CONTAINMENT LOCKOUT – SECURE CLEARANCE REQUIRED.

Fiona swiped her card across the scanner, her fingers flying across the touch screen as she typed in her emergency medical override code: MED-8894-ILLINOIS-TRAUMA.

The screen flashed yellow, then green.
