Chapter 1 - The Gathering of Shadows

At six-thirty in the morning, the cold November rain had turned into a thick, gray fog that rolled across the manicured lawns of the Moretti estate. Alessandro stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private gym, his bare torso glistening with sweat. He had spent the last ninety minutes hitting the heavy bag, each blow echoing through the vaulted room like a gunshot. It was the only way to quiet the roar of betrayal in his mind.

He wrapped a white towel around his neck and walked out into the corridor, where Marco Bellini, his chief of security and closest childhood friend, was already waiting. Marco looked like he hadn't slept either; his dark suit was pristine, but his eyes were sharp, calculating, and heavy with the burden of what he had to report.

“The perimeter cameras didn't catch him, Boss,” Marco said, his voice a low rumble. “Whoever he was, he knew the exact blind spot between the eastern terrace and the servant passage. He bypassed the infrared sensors. That requires a schematic of our internal security architecture.”

Alessandro didn't look at Marco. He stared down at his own knuckles, bruised and red from the leather bag. “A schematic that only three people in this house possess.”

“Alessandro…” Marco hesitated, crossing his arms. “Isabella has had access to the master drive since the engagement party in August. If she gave it to him—”

“We don't speculate, Marco. We verify,” Alessandro interrupted, his voice dropping into that terrifyingly calm register that made even his capos tremble. “I want a full sweep of her call logs. Every burner phone registered within five miles of this sector over the past six months. And I want to know who ‘Daniel’ really is. If he’s an old friend of the Romano family, Enzo’s old ledgers will have his name.”

Before Marco could reply, the heavy oak doors at the end of the hall opened. Isabella walked into the light. She had replaced her silk robe with a tailored woolen dress, her dark hair pinned back perfectly. She carried a tray with a silver espresso pot and two porcelain cups. She looked every bit the future queen of the Moretti syndicate—poised, elegant, and entirely unbothered by the storm brewing beneath the surface.

“Good morning, Alessandro,” she said, her voice smooth and warm. She offered a cup to Marco, who declined with a polite but stiff nod before stepping back into the shadows. She set the tray down on a side table and walked over to Alessandro, her small hands resting gently against his damp chest. “You’re pushing yourself too hard today. Is it because of last night?”

Alessandro looked down into her dark brown eyes. For two years, he had believed those eyes held nothing but devotion. Now, every blink felt like a calculated maneuver. He reached up, his fingers brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his thumb lingering just over her pulse point on her neck. It was racing. She was terrified, but her face remained a perfect, flawless marble mask.

“I like to be prepared for surprises, Isabella,” Alessandro said softly, his voice dripping with hidden meaning. “Last night reminded me that even the strongest walls have cracks.”

Isabella didn't flinch. She smiled up at him, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “Daniel is gone, Alessandro. I gave him enough money to leave Chicago permanently. He won't be a distraction anymore. Our wedding is in three weeks; that is all that should matter to you.”

“Of course,” Alessandro murmured, leaning down to kiss her forehead. The kiss was cold, a formality before a declaration of war. As she turned to leave, Alessandro caught Marco’s eye from across the room. The order was silent, but absolute: Watch her every move.
