Chapter 10 - The Almond Cake Promise

One year later.
The November cold had given way to a beautiful, crisp autumn afternoon. The Moretti estate was alive with the sound of music, laughter, and the clinking of champagne glasses. The iron gates were open wide, but there were no armed guards in the booths today; instead, they were decorated with white silk ribbons and blooming white roses.
It was the wedding day.
The grand lawn was filled with over two hundred guests—capos who had sworn absolute loyalty to Alessandro, neighboring families who had finally found permanent peace under the combined Moretti-Romano alliance, and ordinary people who worked to keep the sanctuary running.
At the head of the long garden table sat Sofia Delgado, dressed in a beautiful linen dress, laughing happily as Marco Bellini poured her a glass of fine Italian wine.
Beside her, four-year-old Emma, looking adorable in a miniature white flower girl dress with a small silver tiara pinned to her dark curls, was running across the grass with her stuffed dog, entirely focused on a massive plate of fresh almond cakes set out on the dessert station.
Isabella stood on the eastern terrace, her lace veil catching the gentle afternoon breeze. Her dark eyes were bright, radiant, and entirely free of the shadows that had haunted her for years. Her father’s memory had been honored, his true murderer was rotting in a federal prison, and her heart was finally whole.
Alessandro walked out from the conservatory, wearing a tailored black tuxedo that made him look every bit the powerful, respected leader he was. He didn't look like a man who feared the dark anymore. He walked over to his bride, his hands sliding around her waist, pulling her close against his chest.
“Are you ready, Isabella?” he whispered into her hair.
“I’ve been ready since three in the morning a year ago,” she smiled up at him, her eyes filled with a deep, endless devotion that held no more secrets, no more lies, and no more fear.
Before they could step down to join the priest at the altar, a small tug on Alessandro’s trousers made them both look down.
Emma stood there, holding up a half-eaten almond cake, her face covered in white powdered sugar.
“Mister Alessandro,” Emma babbled proudly. “Miss Isabella said I’m the best helper today because I carried the rings and I didn't drop them in the fountain!”
Alessandro laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed beautifully off the limestone walls of the old mansion. He knelt down, wiping the sugar from the little girl’s cheek with his thumb, then kissed her forehead.

“You are the best helper this family ever had, Emma,” Alessandro said softly, his heart swelling with an emotion so profound it brought tears to his eyes. “You gave us our tomorrow.”
He stood up, taking Isabella’s hand in his, their fingers interlocking perfectly as they walked down the steps toward the altar under the warm autumn sun. The lonely nights were gone, the conspiracies were dead, and for the Moretti family, their true paradise had finally, beautifully begun—a peace that would last forever.
