Chapter 6 - The Quarry of the Damned

Thursday night arrived with a vengeance. The rain had returned, slicking the asphalt of the deserted highways leading out of Chicago. A convoy of four black armored SUVs tore through the darkness, their headlights cutting through the thick fog.
In the lead vehicle, Alessandro sat in the backseat, his expression unreadable. Beside him sat Isabella, dressed in a thick winter coat, her hands tightly clasped in her lap. She believed they were heading to the northern railyards to oversee the multi-million-dollar smuggling transfer. She had no idea they had turned south miles ago.
“You’re quiet tonight, Alessandro,” she said, trying to steady her voice over the rumble of the engine.
“I’m just thinking about loyalty, Isabella,” Alessandro said, looking out the window as the skeletal frames of the industrial quarry appeared through the rain. “My father always said that a man can survive a thousand enemies outside his walls, but he cannot survive one kiss from a traitor inside them.”
Isabella’s breath caught. She looked out the window, suddenly realizing the landscape was entirely wrong. There were no tracks here. No trains. Only massive, yawning craters of limestone and abandoned heavy machinery.
“Alessandro… where are we?” she gasped, her hand moving toward the door handle.
The SUV slammed to a halt. Marco opened the rear door, his weapon drawn and pointed directly at her chest. “End of the line, Miss Romano. Step out of the vehicle.”
Isabella turned to Alessandro, her face filled with absolute terror, the mask completely shattered. “Alessandro, please! You don't understand—”
“I understand everything,” Alessandro said, stepping out into the pouring rain, his dark trench coat whipping around his legs. He dragged her out by her arm, forcing her to stand beside him at the edge of the deep quarry pit. Around them, thirty heavily armed Moretti soldiers emerged from the shadows, their rifles trained on the entrance road.
A few minutes later, the roar of multiple engines approached. A caravan of six vehicles bearing New York license plates tore into the quarry, stopping in a crescent formation directly opposite Alessandro’s men.

The doors opened, and dozens of Lucchese soldiers stepped out, led by Don Carmine Lucchese himself—a bloated, ruthless old tyrant wrapped in a fur coat—and beside him stood Daniel Vance, the former FBI agent, a tactical rifle slung over his shoulder.
“Alessandro!” Carmine laughed, his voice echoing off the stone walls. “You walked right into it! Your pretty little fiancée gave us the keys to your kingdom!”
