Chapter 4 - The Viper in Silk

Ten minutes later, the grand parlor of the Boss’s compound was illuminated by the soft glow of a massive marble fireplace.

Sitting in a high-backed leather armchair was Elder Nicholas—a frail-looking man in his late seventies, wearing a tailored charcoal suit and a silk scarf wrapped around his thin neck. Despite his aged appearance, his eyes were as sharp and venomous as a viper’s. Standing behind him were two towering bodyguards in dark suits, their hands folded neatly across their waists, their body language radiating absolute, professional lethality.

The Boss walked into the room calmly, carrying Maya in his arms. Brutus walked beside him, his heavy paws making no sound on the hardwood floor.

Elder Nicholas looked up, his thin lips curling into a cold, polite smile that lacked any human warmth.

—You look tired, Arthur, Elder Nicholas said, his voice smooth, carrying the refined accent of old European aristocracy. —Running a harbor city seems to have aged you faster than I anticipated.

—I age because I work, Nicholas, the Boss replied, sitting down on the sofa opposite the old man. He kept Maya nestled securely against his chest. —Unlike the Council, who sit in snow-capped mountains collecting tribute from better men.

Nicholas’s smile flickered, but he didn't lose his composure. He leaned forward, resting his hands on his silver-headed cane.

—Let us skip the pleasantries, Arthur. The Council heard about the unpleasantness with your lieutenant, K19. A shame. He was a very efficient administrator. But more importantly... we know your sister Elena is dead. And we know she bore my grandson’s heir before she passed.

Brutus let out a low, warning growl from the floor, sensing the sudden spike of tension in the room. The Boss placed a gentle foot on the dog's shoulder, calming the animal instantly.

—The child is my niece, Nicholas, the Boss said coldly. —She stays with me.

—She is a Vance by blood, Arthur, Nicholas countered, his tone hardening into iron. —Her father was my eldest son. By the laws of the High Council, any child born of the main bloodline must be raised in the Geneva sanctuary, away from the crude violence of local street gangs. She belongs to the Council.

—This 'local street gang' just erased your southern smuggling routes in thirty minutes, the Boss said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. —And my sister sent this child to me, Nicholas. Not to you. She knew you would turn this baby into a political pawn before she could even walk.

Nicholas let out a soft, mocking sigh. —Arthur, Arthur... do not be foolish. Look out your windows. You think I came here alone in a single sedan?

Outside, through the floor-to-ceiling windows, dozens of red laser sights suddenly illuminated the dark garden. Over fifty heavily armed mercenaries, clad in urban camouflage and carrying suppressed assault rifles, emerged silently from the treeline, surrounding the entire compound.

—My private strike team has secured your outer perimeter, Nicholas said, leaning back in his chair with supreme confidence. —Your guards have been neutralized or pinned down. You are completely outmatched, Arthur. Give me the child, and I will leave you your city. Refuse, and I will burn this estate to the ground and take her anyway.

The Boss didn't flinch. He didn't even look at the laser sights painting the walls around him. Instead, he reached down, pulled a small silver pocket watch from his vest, and clicked it open.

—It is four-fifteen in the morning, Nicholas, the Boss said smoothly.

Nicholas frowned. —What are you talking about?

May you like

—At four-ten AM, three of your private banks in Zurich were seized by international financial regulators, the Boss said, looking up from his watch with a cold, victorious gleam in his eyes. —At four-twelve AM, your elder brother’s estate in Como was surrounded by Italian anti-mafia tactical units. And right now... your strike team outside is realizing that their comms are completely dead.

Nicholas’s face paled slightly. He reached into his coat for his satellite phone, but before his hand could touch it, the glass windows of the parlor exploded inward.
