Chapter 6 - The Council's Fall

The collapse of the High Council of Elders over the next seventy-two hours was swift, surgical, and absolute.
Using the mountain of financial evidence and decrypted server files recovered from K19 and Elder Nicholas’s personal devices, Frank Vance coordinated with international law enforcement agencies across three continents. The vast, corrupt empire that had quietly controlled European shipping lanes, offshore banks, and corrupt politicians for half a century was dismantled piece by piece.
In Grantham, the mood was one of quiet, triumphant rebirth.
The syndicate was no longer a fractured, paranoid criminal organization hiding in the shadows. Under the Boss's absolute leadership, the group underwent a sweeping transformation, shedding its illegal rackets and transitioning into a legitimate, powerful maritime logistics and security firm—the Phoenix Harbor Group.
On a warm Tuesday morning, five days after the siege of St. Jude's, the Boss sat in his freshly restored study.
The sun shone brightly through the brand-new glass windows, casting long golden light beams across the polished hardwood floor. Maya was lying on a soft velvet play-mat in the center of the room, giggling softly as Brutus gently nudged a soft plush ball toward her with his massive black snout.
Marco walked into the room, wearing a sleek gray suit, carrying a leather binder. He looked confident, rested, and proud.
—The final reports from Geneva are in, Boss, Marco said, setting the binder on the desk. —The remaining Council members have agreed to the full surrender terms. They have signed over all commercial rights to the northern shipping lanes to Phoenix Harbor, and Elder Nicholas has been permanently stripped of his voting rights.
—And the city council? the Boss asked, leaning back in his leather chair.
—Mayor Hayes resigned this morning, Marco smiled. —The interim commissioner has formally dropped all legacy investigations into our harbor operations. The city is clean, Boss. Entirely clean.
The Boss looked at the report, then turned his gaze toward the floor where his niece was playing with the war dog that had protected her life through fire and blood.
—It was never about the city, Marco, the Boss said softly. —It was about making sure that when this little girl grows up, she never has to hear the word 'syndicate' whispered in the dark. She will know only honor, peace, and security.
—She will have the greatest protector in the world, Boss, Marco said, his eyes filled with deep, sincere affection.
Before the Boss could reply, Frank walked into the study, holding a secure satellite phone. His expression was serious, though not panicked.

—Boss, Frank said. —We have an incoming transmission from Vienna. It's from your sister’s old estate manager. He says there is one final piece of business regarding Elena’s estate that requires your personal presence.
The Boss stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. —Prepare the private jet, Frank. Marco, you and Brutus are coming with me. It’s time we bring my sister home.
