Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding

Six months passed.
The city of Grantham blossomed under the warm summer sun. The old waterfront docks—once a dark, neglected place of crime, smuggling, and backroom violence—had been completely transformed into the Phoenix Maritime District.
Where rusty shipping containers and rotting warehouses once stood, there were now clean, vibrant public plazas, modern logistics centers, and a beautiful waterfront park where children played safely near the water.
The Phoenix Harbor Group had become the largest, most respected employer in the region, providing thousands of fair, well-paying jobs to local workers and former soldiers who had left the life of crime behind.
High atop St. Jude’s Hill, the Boss’s estate had also transformed. The bullet holes in the parlor had been repaired, the shattered glass replaced, and the dark, intimidating compound was now filled with light, laughter, and green gardens.
On a bright Sunday afternoon, the estate grounds were host to a massive celebration—the first birthday party of little Maya.
Tables draped in white linen were set out across the vast green lawn. Dozens of guests—former lieutenants, local community leaders, workers from the docks, and their families—gathered under the warm sun, enjoying music, food, and laughter.
Marco, wearing a casual polo shirt instead of his usual tactical suit, was grilling steaks near the patio, laughing with Frank Vance, who was showing a group of young children how to operate a small toy boat in the garden fountain.
In the center of the lawn, wearing a bright pink summer dress and a small flower crown, was little Maya. She was taking her very first wobbly steps across the soft grass, giggling uncontrollably as Brutus walked slowly beside her, keeping his massive body just inches away so she could reach out and steady herself against his thick fur whenever she lost her balance.
The crowd cheered and clapped as Maya successfully walked ten full paces without falling, letting out a triumphant squeal before flopping happily onto the grass beside the giant war dog, who immediately began licking her cheek with affection.

The Boss stood on the porch, watching the scene with a quiet, deep joy radiating from his face.
He had traded his heavy wool overcoat for a comfortable linen shirt, his expression relaxed, his posture no longer that of a hunted warlord, but of a proud, peaceful father figure.
