Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Six months later.
The high-rise building in downtown Chicago now read: VOSS GLOBAL LOGISTICS.
Inside, the atmosphere was completely different. The dark, secretive dealings of the past had been replaced by a transparent, modern corporate structure. The illegal shipments had been phased out, replaced by high-value, legitimate cargo lines.
Declan sat in his massive office, looking out at the city skyline. He wore a simple white shirt, his sleeves rolled up, his face relaxed.
The door opened, and Norah walked in, holding two cups of coffee. She wore a simple summer dress, her hair falling softly over her shoulders. She looked happy, the deep-seated fear that had haunted her for years finally gone.
"You're working late," she said, placing a cup on his desk.
"Just finishing the quarterly reports," Declan said, standing up and pulling her into a gentle embrace. He kissed her forehead, breathing in the scent of her lavender shampoo. "How are the kids?"
"They are great," Norah smiled. "Leo is convinced he can swim in the lake, and Maya has started drawing pictures of the boats. She wants to be a captain, she says."
Declan laughed, a warm, genuine sound that he had never used before. "She’ll be a great captain. She’s got the determination."

"We are safe, Declan," Norah said softly, looking up at him. "Really safe. I don't see the men in the black cars anymore. I don't feel like I have to look over my shoulder."
"I promised you, Norah," he said, stroking her cheek. "I cleared the ground. There are no more shadows."
