Chapter 7 - The Breach

The peace within the Rossi estate was shattered three weeks later on a moonless Tuesday night.

At 3:00 AM, a sudden, deafening explosion rocked the east wing of the mansion, blowing out the stained-glass windows in the grand foyer and sending plumes of black smoke pouring through the corridors.

Automatic gunfire echoed from the courtyard outside.

Victor Moretti, desperate and facing life in federal prison following his daughter's confession, had hired fifty foreign mercenaries to launch a suicide assault on the Rossi estate, aiming to kill Dominic, Carmela, and the maid who had exposed his family.

Skyler bolted awake in her bed as the alarm sirens blared throughout the house.

Before she could reach the door, it burst open, and Dominic rushed into the room. He was fully armed, wearing a tactical vest, holding a suppressed assault rifle in his right hand.

"Dominic! What's happening?!" Skyler cried out.

"Moretti's men breached the perimeter gates," Dominic said quickly, grabbing her hand and pulling her out of bed. "They blew the main generator. The backup security detail is holding the foyer, but we need to move to the safe room below the wine cellar."

He led her down the dark, smoky corridor where spent bullet casings littered the polished marble floors. Red emergency lights flashed along the walls, casting eerie shadows.

Mateo met them near the central staircase, his face covered in soot, firing his sidearm down into the lower lobby.

"Don Dominic! They have heavy weapons! We need to evacuate Lady Carmela through the tunnel!" Mateo yelled over the thunderous roar of gunfire.

"Where is my mother?!" Dominic demanded.

"She’s in the lower kitchen with two guards! We're heading there now!"

They rushed down the narrow servant stairs leading to the basement level—a route Skyler knew like the back of her hand from her months working as a maid.

Suddenly, two armed mercenaries in black tactical gear kicked open the heavy metal doors at the end of the hallway, their weapons raised directly at Dominic and Skyler.

"Dominic, look out!" Skyler shouted.

Without missing a beat, Dominic pushed Skyler behind his broad frame, raising his rifle and firing four precise rounds. The two attackers collapsed onto the floor.

"Keep moving!" Dominic barked, guiding her through the smoky kitchen corridors toward the subterranean wine cellar where the reinforced steel blast doors of the panic room were located.

Inside the vault room, Carmela sat terrified on a bench, surrounded by three Rossi bodyguards.

"Dominic! Skyler!" Carmela wept with relief as they entered.

"Get inside the vault," Dominic ordered, pushing Carmela and Skyler toward the heavy steel doorway. "Mateo, seal the doors from the inside."

Skyler stopped, holding the heavy frame of the blast door. "Dominic... aren't you coming inside?!"

Dominic loaded a fresh magazine into his rifle, his face set in stone as he looked at her through the smoke.

"Moretti is out there," Dominic said coldly. "He brought this war to my home. I am going to end it tonight so you and my mother never have to run again."

"No! Dominic, please!" Skyler cried out, reaching for his hand. "It's too dangerous!"

Dominic stepped back, his eyes softening as he looked at her one last time. "Seal the doors, Mateo. Keep her safe."

The massive steel blast doors creaked shut, cutting off Skyler's desperate screams as the heavy locks engaged with a deep, echoing thud.
