Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Realm

Six months passed.
The snows of winter melted away, giving rise to a brilliant, sun-drenched spring that transformed the Rossi estate.
The destroyed east wing was completely rebuilt—not in the dark, imposing, cold Victorian style of Dominic's predecessors, but with wide, modern floor-to-ceiling glass, airy sunrooms, and lush indoor gardens designed under Skyler's direction.
The household had changed completely. The arrogant, cruel head housekeeper who had once mocked Skyler was fired, replaced by a kind, efficient older woman named Mrs. Gable, whom Skyler personally selected.
Skyler was no longer referred to as a servant, a maid, or a ward.
She was the mistress of the house.
She had established the Gallagher Foundation—a multi-million-dollar charitable organization funded entirely by Duca-Rossi enterprise profits that provided shelter, job training, and legal protection for underprivileged women and domestic abuse survivors across New York State.
On a bright afternoon in May, a grand garden party was held on the estate's sprawling lawn.
Hundreds of guests filled the grounds—not just syndicate leaders and politicians who now approached Skyler with absolute respect and deference, but working-class women, former maids, and community leaders.
Skyler stood near the grand marble fountain, wearing a custom-tailored emerald-green silk dress that hugged her gorgeous, full figure with absolute perfection. Her auburn hair fell in soft waves over her shoulders, and the faint pink scar on her cheek was visible—worn not as a flaw, but as a badge of honor.
Carmela sat on a cushioned bench nearby, sipping iced tea, looking healthier and happier than she had in years, her memory stabilized thanks to proper medical care and zero stress.
"Look at you," Carmela smiled warmly as Skyler walked over. "My beautiful girl. You shine brighter than any diamond in this city."
"I learned from the best, Carmela," Skyler smiled back, sitting beside her and gently squeezing her hand.
Dominic walked down the stone terrace steps, wearing a tailored navy-blue suit that emphasized his broad shoulders. The cold, feared Don who had once ruled through fear alone now moved with an air of profound, settled contentment.
He walked straight to Skyler, stepping between two lingering politicians who immediately bowed their heads in respect and walked away.

Dominic reached down, taking Skyler's hand and pulling her up from the bench.
"Come with me," he whispered into her ear.
