Chapter 8 - The Fall of Moretti

Inside the reinforced vault, hours felt like agonizing centuries.

The sound of muffled explosions and distant gunfire echoed through the thick concrete walls, but the blast doors remained secure. Skyler sat beside Carmela, holding the elderly woman's hands, praying with every beat of her heart for Dominic's survival.

At 7:00 AM, the heavy hydraulic locks finally disengaged with a loud hiss.

The steel doors swung slowly outward.

Skyler jumped to her feet, rushing toward the entrance.

Standing in the doorway, bathed in the gray morning light filtering down from the destroyed upper floor, was Dominic. His tactical vest was scorched, his face smeared with soot and blood, but he was standing tall.

Behind him stood Mateo and twenty heavily armed Rossi soldiers. The gunfire outside had completely stopped.

"Dominic!" Skyler cried out, throwing all caution to the wind. She ran across the room and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him with all her strength, unbothered by the dirt or the smell of gunpowder on his clothes.

Dominic let out a low breath, wrapping his powerful arms tightly around her full waist, pulling her flush against his chest and burying his face into her auburn hair.

"It's over, Skyler," Dominic whispered against her ear, his voice rough with exhaustion. "The Moretti family is no more."

Victor Moretti's desperate strike had failed. Dominic's loyal forces had flanked the mercenaries, surrounding them in the central courtyard. Victor himself had been captured, handed over directly to the FBI under a mountain of federal terrorism and treason charges that guaranteed he would spend the rest of his natural life in a supermax facility.

The war that had threatened to destroy New York's underworld was officially over.

Dominic pulled back slightly, holding Skyler's face in his hands, staring into her eyes with an intensity that made her heart soar.

"You kept my mother safe down here," Dominic murmured softly. "You kept my heart alive out there."

In front of his surviving soldiers, his guards, and his mother, Dominic reached down and kissed Skyler passionately on the lips, sealing a silent promise that no force in the city would ever break.
