Chapter 4 - The Clean-Up

By 3:00 AM, the executive floor was as silent as a tomb.

Callum Tierney was gone, slipping out the service exit with a single carry-on bag and a one-way ticket to South America, his financial empire reduced to a signed stack of legal transfer documents sitting neatly on Ronan’s desk.

Ronan stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his private office, watching the rain finally begin to taper off over the Boston harbor. The dark, churning waters were starting to reflect the first pale gray streaks of dawn breaking over the Atlantic.

His phone buzzed against his thigh. He pulled it out and tapped the screen.

Secure Message from Dr. Weaver: Patient stable. Heavy metal chelation therapy successfully initiated. Fetal vitals strong. Patient is resting comfortably.

A long, slow breath escaped Ronan’s chest—a breath he felt he hadn't truly taken since he first saw that crumpled medical envelope in Sienna’s tote bag.

The immediate threat was neutralized. The traitor was cast out. The corporate structure was secured under a name that mattered more to him than all the shipping terminals on the eastern seaboard.

Yet, as he looked around the cavernous, darkened office, a strange, heavy emptiness settled over him. For thirty-four years, Ronan Mercer had defined himself entirely by control, by violence, by the cold, unfeeling machinery of power. He was a man who owned ports, bought politicians, and settled disputes with a Sig Sauer and a closed door.

But looking down at his phone, realizing that a tiny, fragile life now depended on his capacity to be something more than a blunt instrument, he knew he couldn't go back to the way things were.

He walked out of his office, locked the heavy mahogany doors behind him, and took the private elevator down to the subterranean garage.
